O/T - What do you do for a living?

Re: O/T - What do you do for a living?
Started working in a little diner at 14 to save for college. Also cleaned in a hospital during the summers. Then I worked in a custom black & white photo lab doing restorations - loved that job. When our department closed I found a job at Fish and Wildlife doing data entry.
Moved to Ontario and get a diploma in interior design - worked designing SPAM!, baths, offices.. anything involving cabinetry. I also did some drafting on the side - back in the day when you still used a drafting table.
Wanted a change and worked as a program coordinator for a coop food bank. Very interesting experience. Eventually I fell backing office work. I worked my way into IT and became a software trainer and the tech support help desk for the company. I enjoyed that job, but I left it after having our son 6 years ago.
Now I'm ready to go back to work! Not sure I've kept up my IT skills enough since I've left, but would be happy doing admin. asst. work again too.

I'm an Industrial Electrician by trade and have spent the last 21 years working with the automation and controls aspect of industrial water treatment systems. The company I work for designs and builds large scale custom systems for a variety of applications ranging from de-mineralizers for for the steam gen/power generation industry to high purity systems for the semi-conductor and pharmaceutical business. We're also branching onto desalination and frac water treatment.

Boomer it looks like you and I have similar jobs, as I work for a rural electric co-op and now after our system GPS is done I maintain and operate our Milsoft Dispatch OMS system. I started out in 1990 as an Apprentice lineman and worked my way to this GIS position.Boomer wrote:For the last 6 years I have been work for the local Electric Utility as a Mapping and Surveying Technician. I manage our GIS program and mapping all of our assets we have in the field.
I use to very much into promoting Archery in our state , I shot in IBO shoots and really devoted alot of time to deer and deer hunting. I grew up showing and breeding horses while raising coon dogs and hunting with my Dad. I later showed many breeds of dogs in AKC shows and raised rabbits for 12 years( had over 500 head at one time).
I have always had a love for guitars and music and have been putting on music shows for a large festival for over 20 years which has given me a chance to meet many artists. I love golf, music , hunting and still fish a few times each year. I hope that in about 8 years I can settle into golf and hunting for the rest of my years and play my guiatrs at night.

Nuthin'!!
Been retired for 5 years now and loving it.
Did a lot of jobs to pay for university; window washing, cleaning the ice off railyard switches with a pick-axe in January, lawn cutting, industrial cleaning, CN freight delivery, donating blood weekly, playing pool, etc.
Graduated in 1973 with a degree in biology and worked different positions in the federal Dept. of Agriculture for 34 1/2 years, much of it in grains research.
Now I do more or less what I want and enjoy life with the little woman.

I started out as a mechanic, then got into Lithography, both graphic design and press operator. That's where I remain now, a commercial printer, and my mechanical background has been very beneficial to both myself employer and myself.

Re: O/T - What do you do for a living?
well i started in the construction industry as a bricklayer labourer for 2 years then on the wall for 7. Do to a change in some rules of development in an area we did 3/4 of our work I got laid off. Needed job as moving to a rental house in the country and expecting first child. Ask to come work in our family feed business and worked there for almost 16 years and part owner for 12 of them. Sold the business due to allergies and father wanting to slow down after 42 years in industry. Started my own bricklaying company for 6 years but due to some bad luck and slow winters I started working for another crew this winter and have been asked to stay on and help the "young" guys. yup working for someone else, Life is GOOD. Making more money and less headaches.
