It's all about time.

Post by planter »

It's all about time. It's been so tough getting in the woods this season. Driving to work on a "choice" day can drive a man or woman crazy.
I swear that this deer was MUCH bigger before I took such an awful shot. My stand is in a smallish tree that was waving like a flagpole in a 15mph breeze. If it wasn't for the hemlocks behind it I would be toast.
I used Dan's favorites the "Millers Killers" arrows and Mike thought I should give the NAP spitfires a shot. I thought 125 grains worth would be fine. Those broadheads seem to be held tightly for a mech and if EVER a deflection should have occured on penetration it was on this shot. Some say the spitfires can deflect without opening and the theory sounded OK.
I don't think he is a real young deer and guessed 3.5. years and wasn't gonna get any bigger. He just looked like a big bodied mature deer when he came in and I wasn't counting points so I culled him I guess.. He came in from behind and swung to the right at about 26 yards. I had to twist as far as I could to the right with the tree against my back.
Not only did I punch the trigger HARD, the deer moved a bit at the shot and was far less broadside than I would have liked. :? :( I hit him WAY back in the hammy and buried the arrow thru the liver powdering the lungs. I actually thought I missed and stayed in my tree for a couple of hours before even looking for my arrow. Even after NOT finding the arrow I climbed back up the tree and Hunted, cursed and fumed. When I finally got down I followed up and found him dead sixty yards away. I never heard or saw him fall and swear I saw him running off. The whole affair is wierd and wonder why I keep doing wierd things after 35 years of hunting. :? It's just a good think it's NOT a spectator sport in my world. God Bless and get in the woods. It's all about time.

Congratulations!!!!!

Sometimes those less than perfect shots have amazing results.
I hit one too far back several years ago and he went down in sight after traveling only 30-35 yards. Turned out the mechanical actually bisected his liver.

I'll tell you strum I can pretty much bet on what Don called you and boy we both had it coming.
How many deer you got stacked out behind the addition Mikey? I'm sure your doing your part. The Vixen tasted blood Mike and killed that one as quick as the Pheonix and it is a little nicer to carry. Quiet as need be with the quiet down thingys on it. Oh Yeah!! She did kill a pig. Wasn't as big as the one you got and the shot wasn't as good BUT the truck was still moving. I got another buck tag and a couple of doe tags to fill so I still get to get out there. Can't imagine just having one tag.
These deer are feeling heavier every year. I had to pull this one alone and 4/10ths of a mile near killed me. :(
Sorry for the blood but this better illustrates how an awful shot can be so deadly. That 2 inch cut three blade is angry. They don't like that shot do they georgiaboy. Tomorrow looks like a nice day to hunt and I can.

Hey, thanks for sharing your story. Very nice buck for sure. Amazing sometimes what a broadhead will do. Really high rack. Again Congrats! :)

Nice deer, congrats. Good to hear you followed up later and found him. :)

Congrats on getting out and hunting and on connecting! Those hind end shots can be quick and lethal if they get an artery - messy but effective! Sounds like it worked for you.

Looking forward to your next photos now. :D
