A week in the woods with rifles...
Yesterday we returned from a week of rifle hunting at our little camp near Huntsville. Although we didn't bring home any deer, we enjoyed the time we were able to spend together with our little family and some friends!
Brought along a rake at the request of our 6 yr old - no end of leaves for him to rake for the first few days!
Took some time out for some hard core Uno challenges near the wood stove:
Also worked on some shooting skills with the pellet gun:
Lunch always tastes better next to the wood stove:
Midweek we were joined by a friend with an ATV and some snow (if our friend looks frustrated its because he was just taunted by some grouse at his last stand and only had his rifle with him - he'd come back for his shotgun and was headed back to see if they were still there defying him to take them home for supper. )
Snow means its time to break out the "Fudd Hat"
Thursday morning we were joined by Kevin/DoeMaster and his Dad/OldBuck. They encountered blizzard conditions on the early morning drive up and the snow continued:
Between the snow squalls we enjoyed moments of brilliant sunshine - this was the view from one the base of a tree I'd snuggled up against waiting for deer (which apparently had more sense than we did and stayed in bed! )
This reminded me of my father - he loved x-c skiing in freshly fallen snow and especially enjoyed when snow piled up on even the smallest branches and twigs:
Tim/TPM and Lorne/OldBuck took an ATV tour of our lot and also the neighbour's more extensive trails and property which we were graciously given permission to hunt.
The beaver pond which we share with our neighbour:
Our little shack is smallish, but there's always room for good friends! Here we're enjoying the "last supper" - pasta with venison sauce courtesy of Kevin/DoeMaster:
One of our friends had found this nice shed earlier that day - he thought Ben looked like the dog from the Grinch:
When our friend showed up with the shed Lorne asked where he left the rest of the buck.
Deer Head or Beer Head - we're not sure. Maybe another "Elliot?" More fun with the shed.
All we had to show at the end of a week in the woods:
I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spend sitting against some tree holding my breath waiting for deer to run by. Living a bit more primitively for a week is good for the soul and I'm grateful that I'm able to go back up north and wander the woods with the rifle again this year!

looks good to me! Especially the Bombay sapphire. Dirty martini, up with blue cheese stuffed olives, please!
Its not often that I'm in the woods with snow on the ground. Maybe that's why the daytime silence out there after a fresh snow never ceases to amaze me.

Re: A week in the woods with rifles...
Thanks for sharing those precious days with us Monica.
You sure are priveliged to have such a pristine spot to sit back in. I enoyed every photo of it. It's great to see Ben and Tim there too. What a great place to entertain guests.
Were you slacking off now that you have your deer?

Maybe a little! Of course it was more like I was watching Ben so Tim would have more time in the woods to get his deer.maple wrote: Were you slacking off now that you have your deer?

And Maple - you're always welcome to join us up there!

Thanks for sharing. It brought back a lot of memories from my past. I was nine the first year I got to go to deer camp, twelve when I got to go to bear camp the first time. It was a whole new world and I'll never forget those times I spent, roughing it in the wild with family and friends.

Some of our best memories made in the field don't involve the taking of an animal.

Awesome pics Moni! Looks like a real great place to hang out! Glad you all had a great time.
Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.
