How not to get invited back to hunt a property.

Post by Sandman »

Hello all,

I headed out to one of the properties around the Mt Forest area the day after the Controlled Hunt ended to have a look around and prepare for getting back into my trees for the remainder of bow season.

I have a really good relationship with the 77 yr old farm owner and really enjoy helping out around the farm.

He has let another couple hunters hunt the property for a few years now during the C/Hunt.

When I started hunting this season I was told by the farmer that his new girlfriend did not want the "little" deer harvested. No problem for me and I knew exactly which deer she was referring to as I had a yearling under my tree several times before the C/Hunt.

When I went to the back fields to check I was shocked at what I found - There were Tim Horton coffee cups, water bottles and food wrappers all over.
It wasnt long before I found a field dressing spot which I could tell was a small deer, complete with the paper backing for the deer tag thrown on the ground.

I also found a newly constructed homemade deerstand in the back corner which I found odd as the farmer asked that I not build any permanent stands on the property.

I went and spoke with the farmer as I feared that he might think it was me who was responsible for the mess.

Needless to say it will be the pairs last hunt on that property.

This is by no means meant to slight the Controlled Hunters (as I am one too) but to show how a very few can ruin it for the many.

I hate it when people don't respect someone else's property.
I'm going to ask a silly question...what is a controlled hunt/hunter? :?

It is equivilant to the gun hunt .. In our area here in Ontario it is called the Controlled Hunt and it is Shotgun/Muzzle Loader only depending on the area you are in. Bow season closes for the Controlled Hunt which is normally the first full week in November (and one week in December) and then re-opens.

Those two hunters don't realize how hard it is to get permission. I used to tell hockey playes I coached. It takes 10 years to build a good reputation and less than 10 minutes to destroy one. I think they just destroyed their opportunity.

A landowner opposite to the area I hunt allowed guys on for the Controlled hunt last year. I think he gave permission but didn't firm up the numbers. Over 5 trucks showed up every morning to hunt his farm and any adjacent farm (including mine) that week. THERE NOT BACK THIS YEAR!

amazing how they get permission and they think it's there land  ....i got lucky when i talked to the owner of the 65 acre parcel behind my house....not only did he give me sole permission as the only one on his land, but kinda gave me charge to the place to help him curb the many tresspassers he has had trouble with the past few years....the few months before oct archery season opened we went and posted all 2 miles of the property line....plus he showed me around every where on it as well....we have a good friendship out of the deal now  ..........bob

The few private spots I hunt.
I make a arrangement I do at least 20hrs a month help on the property.
Some disagree with it but like I tell them "If you are going to help me with a place to hunt, At least I can do is help them to give them some free time."
May my aim be true and my arrow fly straight

My Mom just gave permission for 2 people to hunt her place, only Monday thru Thursday. They showed up on a Saturday, and it was 4 people . One of them shot after dark, ten minutes later showed up at the house, said he couldn't find blood. When asked what he shot at, he said couldn't tell if it was a buck or a doe  ! I have been requested by Mom to show them the gate the next time they show up. Give some people an inch, they take a mile!

I've seen that kinda stuff too and it makes me so mad!! I find it hard to believe that a person could have so little respect for another persons property. Good riddance to them!

I have to say that I'm really not that supprise. There are A LOT of hunters out there that simply don't give a rat's a$$ about anything else but getting their tag filled. I see it all the time, although very, very rarely in the bow season (I'm also a rifle hunter so I know!).

I assume that the owner of that property got everyone's names before they were allowed on the property? Phone numbers and address as well? If he did, I'd pass along that information to the other landowners close by to make sure they aren't allowed access anywhere else. I ask this as I would NEVER allowed anyone on my property w/o fully knowing who they are in the 1st place!

I agree with most everything that has been said.

But what I find most unbelievable about this story is that a 77 year old has a new "girlfriend"!!!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

LOL @ Okie!

It is so discouraging to have people come in and trash your property. I have a peeve over flaming cigarette butts. I picked up enough in the Marine Corps to last me a lifetime. Everytime some swine comes over or stops by and flips their butt on the ground I make them pick it up!

I was on top of the roof when building a new home and some swine neighbor came over on a 4-wheeler. He was drinking a Busch and talking chit. As he was leaving (because I did not come down off the roof to chat) he tossed his beer can in the yard. I climbed down off the roof, jumped in my truck, and drove up to his hoe, got out, and threw the can in his yard right in front of him. Last time he did that crap LOL

As it should be!! Good on ya Maple. :)

I do the same at my uncle's where I hunt. Cut up and haul deadfalls out of the fields, pick rocks out of the fields, clean up the ditches and put his plow on the 4 wheeler for him once the snow gets close. Little things just to let him know I appreciate the privledge of hunting his land. :)
