food plots

Post by vortex »

Okay, this spring I am going to try to start a food plot. Soil type is a sandy loam. Sun shine probably from 1000hr to 1400hr. Plot size maybe 1/4 acre (it was a log staging area). So what would be the best crop to try to grow??

Clover will probably be the easiest to grow and maintain;and the cheapest.

It won't be about planting one crop. Check this place out.
You need to start with a soil test. Then do lots of reading.

Clover. It grows anywhere.
No need to buy the expensive so called deer stuff.
Just by the red or white that the farmers plant for livestock.

There is lots of things to plant most of it you can get from the local co-op. But plant a variety to find out what the deer want. Mix the seeds so they have to wander around the plot and introduce themselves to the variety you plant. They are like people, not all deer will like the same thing and it sometimes takes time for the deer to start eating what you plant.
It is very important to get your soil sampling done so see what you need for good growth.
Don't forget that they want and need browse too so hinge cutting some smaller trees is good too!
Latino clover is very popular.

ladino clover is very good here too..i usually buy a 50lb food plot mix..it has oats, rye grass, wheat, winter peas and a little clover all in one..after i plant all of this i can top coat with more seed like the ladino and turnips..when the green is gone in the woods they really go at it..our winters wont kill it, but it is rare here if it gets below 20degrees farinheit..our average lows are more like 28 or so

You'll need to decide what you're trying to accomplish. Perennial plot to nourish the herd or an annual killing plot timed for bow or rifle season for example. Check out the QDMA website forums. They're a great resource for information on foodplots, habitat improvement etc.
