This is my sons (13years old) first year hunting where he is the shooter. We have seen a few deer this year but nothing close enough for Tony to have a good shot. Last Friday the 30 of Dec I took the afternoon off of work to take another kick at the can before the close of the season. On our way to the stand we saw a lot of tracks in the fresh snow but once at the stand nothing. So we decided to go back to where we saw the tracks and find a spot to sit on the ground. We were only there for about 30 min when we started to see some deer off in the distance. About an hour after we got there a doe came out at 15 yards and spotted us right away, blew, and ran off. With only 10 min of hunting light left I spotted some movement to our right and told Tony to shoulder the bow and get ready. 12 deer popped out at 20 yards. I was watching one big doe that was at the back of the pack that I thought gave Tony the clearest shot and just as I was about to say shoot I hear the twang of the bow and then I see a bright red light go straight towards the deer and disappear. They all ran off. We waited about 15 min and then we went to look for the arrow and found nothing. No arrow, no hair no blood. I told Tony we were going back to the truck and head home and give the doe some time. We returned a couple of hours later with a good buddy of mine and his son. We looked for quite awhile and only found a couple of drops of blood in the snow here and there and still no arrow. At that point we decided he had only grazed the deer and it was not a fatal shot. My son was very disappointed and we went home.
The next morning we were up bright and early and back to the same spot we sat the night before. We saw another 10 deer but nothing presented a shot. At 10 am we were heading out but before we left I told my son that the fact we didn’t find the arrow was really bothering me so I wanted to go and look for it one last time. I go off in one direction and Tony in another. After looking for quite some time I decided it must of hit a tree and disintegrated. I went to go catch up with Tony, he was wondering around and had stopped to look at some tracks. When I got close to him I noticed an odd shaped about 25 yards ahead of him. It was the doe from the night before. While cleaning the deer we found the arrow inside of her. You see the deer was not quartering to it was almost head on to us when he shot. I could of sworn it was more broadside than that at the time he shot. The arrow entered high in the front shoulder and the broad head was stopped by the hip bone. The lumenok was still on.
The look on Tony’s face when I told him that thing over there was his doe from the night before is something I will never forget.

There's not much, that's better than a Father, Son activity like hunting, I now have the pleasure of enjoying it from both sides, as a son and as a father.

Congrats to both of you. I know he was excited when you found the doe.
I still can remember my 9 year old sitting on my lap and killing his 1st deer with a rifle many years ago that led to a lot of hunting companionship throughout the years, this was an awesome experience and I know the experience you 2 shared was just as exciting.
