"Ode To A Bush"

Post by sipsey »

While sitting on the creek bank behind my house the other morning I began to muse about my friends first shot and miss with his Ecal.

He is an excellent shot. As he sat in a low profile chair behind a blind he watched as a nice 8 pt., nose to the ground, headed his way. The forearm of his Exocet rested on a bi-pod as the buck paused at 20 yds. He squeezed the trigger and the lighted nock disappeared. The buck jumped, stopped, put its nose up and twitched its ears.

After a few moments the deer lowered his head and continued on the trail. He watched as the buck headed over a knoll in the distance. This is his first archery shot at a deer and he kept expecting the buck to stagger. He got up and walked towards where the deer stood and on the way spied a small sapling he had overlooked. A small nick on one branch revealed what happened.

He carefully followed the bucks path for a good ways to make sure of the miss. It really got off with him but he is now even more determined.

Anyway, as I sat thinking of my friends shot, some thoughts began to form about that little ricochet.
He got a kick out of it when I e-mailed it to him.

"Ode To A Bush"

Oh scrubby fragile little bough
You diverted my arrow i know not how

The big buck stood fixed just beyond
You steered my shaft off towards the pond

You seemed so spindly and minute
As I took careful aim and did shoot

I squeezed the trigger the bolt did fly
Up up towards the bright blue sky

You thwarted my shot with barely a nick
To make me feel foolish was one good trick

I hope you will like your new abode
Down the hill and up the road .

Good job! Had me laughing! Goes to show that often the most talked about & memorable hunts aren't the ones involving dead animals. :D I'm sure your friend will cherish the poem.

I know how it did it. Somehow those things bend or move right as you shoot! :x People think they're sweet and innocent, but I know differently!

you got that right, I missed a monster buck years ago because one jumped in front of my arrow deflecting it over the bucks back.

I missed a doe the same way this year at 25 yards I almost got reloaded for a second shot .
After the the first shot the deer ran about 10 steps stopped looked around and started walking back to were she was when I shot trying to figure out what the noise was.

Brings back memories of my first shot at a deer with a bow.
Back in the 70s I hunted with an old Bear recurve and cedar arrows. The "buck of a lifetime" (huge non-typical rack) was within a few yards, broadside, and looking away from me. A "gimme" shot if there was ever one! I drew the bow, released the arrow, and watched in horror as it stuck in the ground under the buck's brisket. I watched the buck bound off then (after a short tirade of expletives) looked for the cause of my arrow's erratic flight. Yep, a small unnoticed branch cut cleanly off the small sapling as a memento.
