The guy was not a teenager when he was arrested with burglary and assault..but that's really a moot point, his record is clean (I assume) since that time and his past should not have made much difference. You never know what this kid said in private to the
Cops and the author choose to only touch very lightly on the fact that an interview with the kid was a deciding factor for what they did. Everyone here knows that the media will twist facts to suit them.

I am personally disgusted with the way police and the school board arrested this guy. I hope he does file a lawsuit.

The cops said the deciding factor was the fact that she was able to describe in detail what a gun looked like. Apparently they ignored the fact that it was made of clear plastic.

A few years ago my son got suspended from school for shooting at a younger child.

He and one of his friends were pointing their fingers at one another in the old "bang - bang - gotcha" game kids will play and a younger child complained they were "shooting it him".
He actually got an in-school (day in the office) suspension for it!

I DID let them know I thought it was a bit overboard. (Told them they were anti-gun, anti-hunting, and anti-common sense over-educated idiots to be more exact.)

BTW- he now attends a different school, I had him transferred to one where they are a bit more reasonable.

Last year my son was sent home with a box and instructions to put some stuff in it that would tell his classmates what he liked to do in his spare time.
He filled it with pictures of his guns/bows (rifles and shotgun), some of him shooting at home and at the range and some trophies he has earned for some of his shooting accomplishments. He was allowed to pass the photos around and tell stories about each one.
He came home with a note from the teacher saying she was very pleased with his presentation and enjoyed watching my typically shy son so full of energy when he talked about something he liked.
He was 8, grade 3.
I was never arrested.

My boy is in 4th grade now. The wife has shown me papers from the boy's school work before, with about every one having some kind of doodle or drawing of a gun on them.  She keeps telling me, "When I get the call about this, YOU are going to be the one going to school to explain about this!"

Luckily, we live is a rural area where guns are accepted and the people at school seem to have some sense. Don't get me wrong, kids shouldn't be taking guns to school, but there's nothing wrong with kids being familiar with guns and how to shoot them.

Just an update on this.

Jessie Sansone is now a client of Solomon Friedman, one of Canada's top lawyers in dealing with matters such as this one.

And...Chief Torigian is to appear on the Jeff Allan Show on AM570 News at 9AM Monday morning.

Good on the lawyer.....can't wait to hear what Chief Matt has to say on this matter, although I can pretty much imagine what will be said, hope Jeff allows phone calls

This is good news. Friedman (and Burlew) are both top notch firearms lawyers. Too bad it had to come to this but good that he has Solomon Friedman at his side. I hope some heads roll over this debacle.

Waterloo Regional Police Service Chief Matt Torigian was on AM570 this morning along with Alison Scott from Family and Children's Services.

Chief Torigian admitted that mistakes were made and announced that an internal investigation of the incident has been launched. He did, however, state that everything was done 'in the best interests of the children'.

Alison Scott echoed Chief Torigian's sentiment that her agency did no wrong in calling the police in so quickly, as they were acting 'in the best interests of the children'.

Any history majors here?

These lines have been used before to excuse government agency action that ignores basic rights and freedoms. Here's a quote, that some might know..."The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation."

I won't mention who that quote is attributed to, nor am I suggesting that Canada is heading in the direction that individual took his own country in. However, the standpoint of sacrificing basic rights and freedoms in order to benefit the children of this country, without using common sense in these matters, is very scary.

Too many have given their lives to give us the freedoms we have and they seem to be slowly eroding. I don't care if the government is Conservative...Liberal...Socialist...whatever. Rights and freedoms must be maintained. Sadly, in this case, Mr. Sansone lost all of his...'for the best interests of the children'...when there was no danger and a simple conversation could have settled things.

According to Shiny Pony whoever brings this person's name up first in an argument always loses.

Kidding aside "for the good of the children" is still not a valid reason to trample and abuse people's rights. They can spew this garbage all they want and it still won't make it right or justify their actions. :(

The line that has made me more angry than anything else, I believe, in this whole ordeal...the Waterloo School Board Superintendant stating that educators 'co-parent'. Excuse me? Co-parent? Teachers teach ABCs and 123s...keep your nose out of my family's business, your eyes firmly on your chalkboard and leave looking out for my child's best interests up to me, the actual parent. Currently it seems that looking out for my child's best interests means removing them from the public school system.

Get a lawyer and take the whole damn lot of them to court!

I agree you may wish to investigate, like the article says have a "conversation with the parents". But there is a HUGE difference between talking with the parents and arresting the man at a school, strip searching him, keeping him in jail, not notifying him of why he is being detained, and saying he was being charged with "possession of a firearm".

How can you be charged with possession of something that they haven't found yet???

All this because of a drawing and some comments from a 4 year old - my God, we've gone crazy!!!

I saw this interview and was amazed that those words came out of his mouth!! Co-parent??? I think not. Aside from perhaps ensuring the kids use good manners and treat others with respect they are most certainly not co-parents. Talk about over stepping boundaries! Some of these agencies have really gotten out of hand and assume way too much authourity in some situations.
