I entered in an annual open archery competition here recently. There were 4 different categories to score in if you want to be the overall winner. The Category I couldn't really enter to win before was the Clout. For those who aren't familiar, its shooting 180 meters (197 yards) at a 1"high foam target center with the scoring rings drawn around it on the ground. I saw that the compound bows which seemed the most accurate used adjustable mirrors to line the clout up, like a type of periscope.
With a couple of weeks to go before the comp, I knocked up a crude mirror from patio tubing that allowed me to keep the scope on the crossbow (I needed the scope left on for the other events). It worked way better that I thought it would, the accuracy shocked me. The equinox had way to flat a trajetory for the bolt to stab in the ground at all. It was 300 meters to walk and get that lot of bolts which all skidded off the target area Anyway, I set the same mirror setup on the Ibex combined with 250 grain tips to try and get a flatter trajectory. Spot on After the distance was adjusted nearly all the bolts hit either in the gold ring or in the clout. In the end I didn't come close to winning the clout, and had about 70% of my bolts skidding out of the center target area. But even so, I was very happy with the accuracy compared to the verticals. I'm hoping with some more fine tuning I'll get them to stay in the ground next year.

Awesome, sounds to me like your on the way to winning your first clout!Dash wrote: But even so, I was very happy with the accuracy compared to the verticals. I'm hoping with some more fine tuning I'll get them to stay in the ground next year.
I & my Brother & a coupla buddies used to have a "Hat Shoot" by putting 2 bales of straw distanced 100 yards apart. You were required to bring a new hat each time & place them on the top of the bale. Point being to knock every one else's hat off the bale. Last hat left on the bale won. Lotsa fun! I think back then I was shooting a Jennings "Model T" compound. Boy, long time ago
Good luck next year Dash, Hoagy

Nice shooting! I would like to learn more about that mirror system you have, a few more pictures from different angles would be great!
Have you looked at the HHA Optimizer? May or may not be of value to you..
Also, a couple years ago a guy came here with a product he made himself (for sale), it was a very robust device to tilt the scope with great accuracy and repeatability. It was quite an amazing device that again, may be of value to you.
Keep up the great shooting and keep us posted on the results.

Hi Pyd, I have a HHA. Its a great tool for long distance target work up to 100M + . But after a certain angle the scope wont see pass the front of the bow. Thats where the mirror box is handy. Really its only the extreme distance in clout that this mirror box is handy (since we don't shoot over each other castle walls anymore what a shame )
Hey Hank..... It surprised me how little I had to raise the equinox to get 180 meters.
That hat shooting sounds like fun Hoagy

Sounds like you need a sight similar to what used to be mounted on the M203 grenade launcher. It sits off to the side so the weapon can be elevated. It uses a dual peep sight and was pretty accurate. I could put those orange chalk practice rounds through a car window at 200 meters no problem.

The adjustable mount was built/sold by 'Wolfblitz' or close to that. He doesn't ship or sell in USA last I knew.
