Arsenal in 1972

Post by Hoagy »

This is a pic of my recurve's in 1972. Best pic I could find.
Top Bow was a Shakespear. A target bow with interchangable limbsets.
Middle bow was a Ben Pearson used for bowfishing.
Bottom bow was a Fred Bear Kodiak used for hunting.
I don't remember the draw weights on any but the Kodiak was beefy & I had a 30" draw. Makes my right shoulder hurt just thinking about it. Hoagy

When I first started out it was with a ben pearson pinto, don't know if any of you remember them? but i thought it was the most beautiful thing i ever saw, it was 46 LB. draw wght. and i killed my 1rst. deer with it 1 1/2 yrs. later and i have been hooked ever since. That was 55 yrs. ago and i still can't get over the feeling of self accomplishment, every time i put meat in the freezer. and I have filled a lot of freezers :D

Thanks Frisky, I gave all that equipment away after my shoulder broke down on me, was outta the game for about 30 years but due to my state opening up to crossbow hunting I'll be back in the timber this fall for sure! :D I'm really looking forward to it.

That's a great collection there Hoagy. I've never owned a recurve but hope to buy a nice one in the future just for some fun shooting. :)

Hi j.krug, they were fun to shoot. I remembered after looking at the pic this a.m. that those Zebco 404 fishing reels was a new thing at the time & worked great except one time I was shooting from a bridge almost straight down & it looked like my arrow was bungy jumping  The string had tangled up internally in the reel & the arrow never broke the water & the return flight was within inches of my shootin eye then fell to the bridge behind me. Needless to say I retired the Zebcos from duty & returned to my traditional open bow reel.
Ahhhh, the good ole days, Hoagy

Boy, that brings back memories. I started out with a long bow that was my brothers. Good for shooting over a hill. Lots of arc to that arrow. The first bow I bought was a Shakepeare super Nedcetah. Nice recurve and so light. Bought it at FleetFarm which is a implement and most everything store.
Took the big jump in the early seventies to a pse compound bow. Had such an usual anchor that the pins were not long enough so I made a bracket so it could be installed differently. Killed a ton of deer with that bow but when I brought it into the archery store to get it serviced the man said, " WHO niger rigged this bow". Color me insulted! Went to another place and bought another bow which was a Darton. Had several after that until 2002 when my health went in the crapper. Had lots of fun and thanks for digging up those memories. :D
