distractd for one moment(graphic pics)

Post by redmandant »

Well to say I should have known better would be an understatement. I am 40yrs old and have been shooting archery for quite some time now and more over I have been shooting crossbows for the last 10yrs. Well it was bound to happen, it happens to everyone at least one time. No I didn't dry fire the bow.. I was actually replacing the string on a x-bow that was dry fired and checking things over... No I didn't forget to take the bolt out before un-cocking the bow.. You guessed it, I had my thumb up where it shouldn't have been....

Image

Well when most have done this, they either lose a nail, or get a nasty blood blister. I tell you, when I do something< i do it big... entire thumb from the base of the nail....

Image
this is a pic with the top set in place before they started surgery...

Image
here the doc is just starting after removing the meta carple bone, notice the gap...

Image

almost finished, less than an hour later..The doc is optomistic that it will take...

Image

And here I sit in my store thinking about how a slight lack of focus can change your life for a good long time. I would hate to think what would have happened if this happened in the field. I had the tip on ice and was at the hospital within 10mins.

An hour to type this with only the left hand, guess I got to learn how to use a mouth call for this turkey season, eh?

Keep your thumbs down

That is a nasty one man! What model were you shooting? I had my latest one about a year and a half ago. Sitting in my stand with the bow in my lap, one hand gripping the bottom of the rail so all I had to do was raise the bow if a deer came in, sure enough a big buck came in and my thumb was still located above the rail. Worst part was after the shot the buck circled and came within one foot of the base of the tree I was in, i could hear my blood hitting the leaves on the forest floor and I managed to keep my composure. A good portion of the nail and flesh was ripped clean off but it was not torn any where near as bad as yours. I was shooting the Y25. It took at least a year for everything to look normal again.

Nice one! Image If nothing else, you and the smiley to the left still have both your thumbs.

Several years ago my step dad got 2 of his fingers caught in a garage door track trying to fix it when the door came down on him. He went to the Dr. and got them fixed and bandaged up. The "funny" thing though is when he was driving. Around home, when you pass someone when you're driving, everyone will generally throw up a finger or two as you pass, just kind of as a "Hi / Hello". With my step dad's fingers bandaged up, everyone though he was waving at them.
