A Couple of Crossbow Moose

Post by Rick Teal »

Here are a couple of moose I've measured in recent weeks that were taken with crossbows last season.

The first was measured in Niagara falls, and was shot south of Kapuskasing. It scores 187+.

This second one was shot near Manitouage (SP?) and was measured at Bass Pro in T.O. The score was 205+.

Pabowdude60:

Sorry! - I missed your question earlier.

Last year, NR moose licences in Ontario were $438.28 - They're probably a little higher this year.

In this provinc NR moose hunters must go through an outfitter (not necessarily guided). Outfitters like bowhunters, because if they are issued (say) 10 bull tags in a season, they can convert them 3X for bowhunters so they can host hunters going after 30 adult bulls. Normally its easier to get an adult tag if you're in a group, but individuals have been known to get tags - but it costs more.

Rick, Thanks for answering back. Do you know any reputable Moose Guides?? They are a massive animal. I would love to go hunting for them. Greg R.

Nice shots. I taught in Manitouwadge for seven years in the seventy's and I know the the moose population there quite well. We had to be careful driving down the highway to 17 because of them. I lost two students hitting those beasts.
However, I just purchased an Ibex and would like to hunt moose in the Wahnapitai area where we've been successful before.
Any suggestions as to how you put down a moose of that size with a xbow.
I realy envy your trophies.

Greg:

Sorry, I can't be of much help there. As a resident I participate in do-it-yourself hunts. The Ontario Trophy Bucks forum has a lot of links to outfitters, so that might be a good place to start. I'm not "techie" enough to be able to copy and post a link, but a search should get you there.

I wish those were my trophies!!!

I'm a measurer, and had the privelage of measuring them at trophy shows.

I may be telling stories out of school here, but I understand the second moose will be on the cover of June's Crossbow Magazine. Though I haven't taped it for SCI, I'm of the opinion that it would be a new SCI world record in the crossbow category - if entered.

I'm starting to like the look of those "euro" mounts more and more; if I get a chance to make a decision on one of my own this year I'm going to give it a go.

Those look really healthy by the way Rick; thick and a lot of mass.
