He Ain't Big, But He's Meat!

Post by Big58cal »

Kinda' feel bad posting this after seeing Stan's turkeys.

Our season opened yesterday. I got down there and in the woods about 6:00 AM. Sat all frickin' day and saw 1 hen and that was it. :x It was windy as all get out all day. I heard 5-6 different gobblers, but none were close and none were on our land.

Went back down this morning. Back up on the bench about 6:15 AM. It was acting like it was going to be windy again, so I wasn't real hopeful. Didn't hear any gobbles at daylight. Finally, the wind just stopped, and everything came to life. I could hear about 3 different hens around me calling trying to get a gobbler's attention, so I wasn't about to be outdone. I heard one hen up on the ridge calling, but she started to act like I was ticking her off by the way she was sounding, so I quit calling in case she had a gobbler in tow so she wouldn't lead him away. About 5 minutes later, I heard 1 gobble from up on the ridge at about 7:20 AM. I purred once and clucked a couple of times on the call, set it down, and put the gun up.

It took several minutes, but I started to hear some leaves rustling coming down off the ridge. Had 4 turkeys come down the ridge, but it was still a little dark in the woods, especially will all the leaves we've got, and I couldn't tell exactly "what" they were. I couldn't see any beards swinging, they were hung up about 35-40 yds out, and it wasn't that light. I kept waiting for them to get closer, but they started getting antsy since they knew that hen was there, but couldn't see her. Finally, I picked out one that I knew HAD to be a male. His head was a lighter color and it didn't have any feathers on it. I started following him in the scope, when he cleared a tree and another bird got away from him, I dropped the hammer on him. DRT!

It's a good think KY's reg's say "male or bearded" turkeys. No wonder I couldn't see his beard.

But I don't turkey hunt for the beards and spurs. I'm in it for the meat!

By the time I get done with one, there usually isn't a whole lot left.

I skinned the thing because I'm thinking of doing a cape mount on the skin. I've been wanting to try it for awile, so I figured I'd give it a shot. A turkey cape mount is the skin/feathers from the neck all the way down the back all the way to the fan. Here's a picture of one I found on the web.

As I said, I kind of feel bad posting pictures of my little turkey after Stan has posted pictures of the monsters he's taken this year. I've still got awile to hunt though and have 1 more tag left.

Little turky?..wha...hes a trophy in my book..
its thrilling to get out there and make one come you way huh..i love it :D great bird man and great story too..cant wait to see the mount..i never thought about that kind..
one thing i kinda wish i had done is saved my first birds fan (we gave it to a lady who makes baskets and such)
im thinking it would have been neat to have layered all three with the beards.

Thanks folks! :D When I heard that gobble up on on the ridge, I got that "feeling" of a good adrenaline dump hitting my system. That's what it's all about.

Kinda' freaked the wife out yesterday when I got home as late as I did. I had told her that I was going to sit out there all day if need be, but this was the first year in probably 8-10 years that I haven't tagged one on opening morning. She had gotten used to me getting home by noon on opening day. This morning, I dropped the hammer at 7:30. Between walking back out for the 4 wheeler, pictures, getting gas, checking the bird in, and the 1.5 hour drive back home, I was back here about 10:15. When I got home, the wife knew I'd gotten one.

Vixenmaster, I'm surprised you don't have'm around there. If you've got tick-toters around there, you ort to have them Thunder Chickens.

Got a good one for you....... Had the truck backed into the barn, got the turkey skinned and had the skin laying on the tailgate. After I cut the head off the carcass, there was a little blood dripping, so I put one of my buckets down that I use to hold the deer scraps and stuff to catch the blood. Of course, both of the dogs were down there being spectators to the whole turkey event. I cut the head off of the skin and pitched it in the bucket too. I piddled around doing other different things and noticed I needed another cup of coffee. Came up to the house, got another cup, and then went back down and started messing with the turkey again. A little later I went to pitch something else in the bucket and looked in it.......... the turkey head was gone! Dang big dog must have snuck it out of the bucket while I went to get the coffee. He was sitting down there with a totally innocent look on his face like he didn't do anything. I walked around the yard looking to see if he buried it, but couldn't find anything. I guess he ate it. Guess it's a good thing that shot in the shells isn't lead, huh?

That's a fine looking turkey there. Congrats to you. I hope your turkey cape turns out. I've never seen that before and I think it's pretty cool. :)

Good on ya man!

One more turkey than I've ever shot.

That bird looks like a giant Hungarian Partridge hanging there; if ONLY those Huns were anywhere near that big1

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like some good eatin' ahead!

Odd how my mind sometimes works, but now you've got me wondering how an old bird would be if the meat was canned? (local grocery just had an unbelievable sale on beef and we canned a good bit - sure makes the cheaper cuts tender. we also canned a bunch of chicken recently.)
