Dropped the HAMMER!!!!!!!
Good Morning All,
Well I dropped the hammer on my second heavist bird of my life. Got to the blind this morning about 5:20 about 6:15 I had 3 toms and 1 jake gobbling. 1 tom gobbled over 70 times and of course he was only 40 yards behind me, which had me pinned down. About 7:15 they flew off the roost in the oppisite direction going up the ridge from me.Well that was the end of the gobbling, so I started calling real soft on a walnut over poplar box call. Never did get answer, so I would call every 20 minute's real soft and only a few yelps at a time. Was about 8:30 and I was getting ready to leave when I finally spotted a hen and jake, so I called once more with some soft yelp's and purr's. That is when all heck broke loose, a gobbler had snuck behind me never saying a word he flew across the fence only 4 feet from where I was sitting next to a large oak tree. Scaring me have to death, he hit the field right next to my decoys at 23 yards, and that is the last thing he ever saw. I put a load of #6's in him, he is a old bird not much on the beard at 9 1/4 inchs long, spurs were 1 3/8 and 1 1/2 but the weight is what is most impressive 27.9 lbs. Here is a couple of pics of him. I am 6-1 and 316 lbs. so you can compare the bird. Thank You for looking and reading. The next one is with the crossbow.
God Bless,
Mark

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll bet he just might be a bit tough when you cook him, though.
What's the barrel length on that gun?

Big bird you got. Great story to. Really enjoy reading about the success stories. Thanks for posting it, and give that regal old dog a pat on the head from me.

Big bird and what action. Even though you are waiting for something to come it is always a shock when it does & what a great dog!

Congrats on the bird Mark! That thing is a beast for sure!!! You should get a few good meals off him, not to mention the memories.
Looks like your pooch beside you is as 'long in the tooth' as you are.
Just when you start thinking things have gotten old hat and you know what to expect, the Good Lord throws you a curve ball, and animals do something that make you just about crap your pants! Ain't it great!!!!
Congrats again on the bird! Definitely a nice one for sure.

Re: Dropped the HAMMER!!!!!!!
Thank You All for the kind words. This bird is 4 to 5 years old. I have been after him for awhile. Never gave him a name because I could never get a very good look at him. I have always tried to hunt a single bird over the years, trying to make it a chess match between me and the bird. I have killed some great birds over the years like, the Painter and Pony tail. My Friend in the picture is Sadie she is 9 years old. She is with me always except turkey hunting, she does go with me sometime's when I deer hunt tho.
God Bless,
Mark
