Back 10 or 11 yrs ago, xbows were only legal to hunt w/ in 3 states. We've come along ways since then, I lost track at 17 or so..........

In this day & age hunters really need to stick together.

I remember the samething happening in the world of muzzle-loading
when scoped in-lines got popular.

A house divided will surly fall :(

I am out in Alberta right now, and it is the same thing out here - "That's not a bow, it is a rifle. I am glad they dont let crossbows in the archery season or else people who dont practice and don't care would be out there injuring animals."

It kinda gets anoying. I don't bother refuting them - no point. I would only be able to use my Excal in the gun season out here, so I left it at home.

OK - I'll admit, I was sorta like that, not liking crossbows. BUT - I have 3 farms that i hunt on. One farm is better to hunt with a XBow. At least I think it is. My friend has 2 XBows - I rode him alot about that - but now I eat my words. I bought an Excalibur and love it and will use it some this fall. I also have 2 PSE Compounds and will use 1 of them on the other 2 farms.

Guess what - I used to say that about the in-line muzzle loaders too - you guessed it, now I have one. I am 66 yrs old, still hunt alot, and have learned:

.........
Time is on our side and one can only hope that attitudes will change with time.
There is absolutely no logical reason for bow clubs and ranges not to include crossbows. We don't seek special status just the ability to join the fun.
In archery competitions there are traditional, compound and compound unlimited divisions. Each of these is divided into youth and adult as well, so there is no reason not to have a crossbow division.

I'm an Equal Opportunity Offender.... I piss off everyone. When I run across someone hating on crossbows, I usually give it back to them about "vertical" compound bows just as good as they're dishing it out about crossbows. It doesn't take long for them to either make it personal, call me a big stupid head, or take their ball and go home. I've got pretty thick skin, so the personal stuff doesn't bother me. Any way they go, their ignorance becomes pretty evident to anyone reading/listening.

I used to shoot vertical bows religiously, even skipping gun seasons to bow hunt exclusively for several years. Shot in 3D tournaments every weekend from probably March to August-September. Shot so much that I had 3 risers, a set of cables, and set of limbs blow up on me while shooting. For all of my shooting, I received a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder and troubles in the bones in my left arm and back. :? Got the rotator cuff fixed, but since vertical bows caused it, I'm not about to screw it up again doing the same.

Now, after having hunting with the Excalbur for a few years, there's no difference between vertical and horizontal bows. The "haters", once you strip away the bias and their arguments, are just selfish and don't want additional people in the woods hunting. If there are, then someone may shoot "their" deer. The seasons in KY are a prime example of this. The "vertical" bow season opens the first Saturday in September. Crossbows don't come in until October 1st because because the vertical bowhunters didn't want to share the early season with crossbows. The pre-rut was another sticking point. The vertical bowhunters wanted the pre-rut to themselves, so the crossbows go out mid-October and reopens when our gun season opens in November.

I think you hit the reason right there pretty well! That and they want to feel better or more exclusive than someone else.

You KY seasons are pretty messed up!

X2 on the messed up seasons.
That too will change when your DNR recognizes the additional costs involved.

The irony is that crossbows have been around for
thousands of years, the compound a few decades.
Some American special forces in Laos found tribal
people using an ancient form of crossbow that probably
preceeded the Chinese version. Let's respect all forms
of bow. As a kid I shot a long bow. Now I shoot both
an excalibur crossbow and my browning micro-adrenaline. Enjoy them all as long as you can!

II try to keep it upbeat and positive when I get negative xbow comments. There's no point in feeding the hate.

I usually come along side them and acknowledge some part of their grumble (like the noise or that it seems like "cheating"). Then I offer them the opportunity to shoot mine. I hold it out to them so they have to pretty much physically refuse. If they won't shoot it I encourage them to just look through the scope. Once they raise the bow they usually realize it's front-heavy and not as easy to hold steady as they may have assumed. I give them another chance to shoot it, and I offer to cock it for them. I promise not to tell their friends that they've shot a xbow. 8)

If they're still pretty negative I'll smile and say something like "Xbows aren't for everyone - they have several disadvantages compared to vertical bows, but we bowhunters need to stick together no matter what we shoot."

They way I figure it, if I can get them to hold or shoot the xbow it will be a step toward understanding... and diffusing the negativity.

Well I can tell you that this vertical bow guy doesn't hate one bit on crossbows! In fact, my first hunting bow was an Excalibur Phoenix. It just happened to be that the crossbow didn't fit my hunting style. I sold the Phoenix and tried a vertical, so now I'm hooked.

The thing is, I know a day will come when drawing 60lbs may no longer be possible, or I the vertical may just not fit me any longer. And when that day comes, you better believe I'll be back to an Exalibur.

These other vertical guys shouldn't be hating on crossbows. If they were smart, they would be investing in their own future! :)

Some are better than others but as long as they make a clean, humane kill who cares what someone's personal preference is. They all have a trade off. As far as bows go, would you rather have someone who gets frustrated practicing with a vertical bow and as a result does not take a good a shot at an animal causing it to be wounded and often unrecovered. Of would you rather have someone who is confident with his practice and shot placement which results in his ablility to accurately distinguish between a good and bad shot when hunting and likely a clean kill.

I don't care what you use as long as you know how to use it right!

I'am not so sure anymore if it's just some hate crossbows, this was the 1st forum I had ever joined, I have since joined a few others also having to do with archery.
I think people just like to hate anything or anyone that is not just like them, I guess it's the old saying that you are free to use, think, or do, anything thing you want, as long as it's just like me. If your not my clone or a mini-me you are wrong, and if we have a contest using the same thing/style etc. & ya beat me, then some how you cheated.
I've seen heated words wrote, how someone is or is not aiming there recurve/longbow, what type of recurve you shoot, etc.
I think people will always hate & try to get rid of anything that is not just like them.
How rude some are & some of the things posted on some of those other forums, makes me think, if it was said face to face, there be alot of bloody noses, & I also wonder if some of these people have ever hunted or shot a bow of any kind.
I think now, it's not so much hating crossbows, as much as it is they hate anything that's just not like them.
