Invention Needed

Post by Galgo »

After working since last season reduce noise and vibration on my X Bow, I notice the biggest offender is still the arrow retainer. Despite the fact that I have had double thick shrink wrap put on it it still gives the thwoooonnnnngggg that lasts the longest after the shot. Can someone out there invent a retainer that is physically prevented from impacting the rail after the arrow leaves its grasp?

Seems simple enough for you great tinkerers and inventors I should think? No reason why the retainer has to hit the rail if it were designed differently...

I'd be the first one in line to buy one  at the right price that is :)

If the noise is the retainer hitting the rail then use either regular heat shrink or double wall heat shrink. If it is just vibrating add weight which will change the frequency to one that you won't hear much of. Drop by the shop or my house and pick up some double wall heat shrink if you want. You can add a few layers to the section near the trigger unit to add weight.

I use mole skin between the clip and arrow. Half way up the retainer I use a half piece (1.5") of stick on Sims vibration strip to dampen the twannng.

I remember someone mentioning Limb Saver I think it was who sells a retainer clip dampener, though I have no idea if it's any better than the ideas already given here.

I put a piece of rubber and used shrink wrap to hold it in place towards the front

Thanks guys. Boo you already installed the double wall wrap on it at the front. DO you mean install more at the back of the the retainer to change freq?

Same here, I've never noticed any noise from the retainer.

I don't worry about the noise my xbow makes since the arrow is allready through the deer by the time he reacts to it so {to me} it is a waste of time trying to quiet it down. Our xbows shoot fast enough that it just don't matter, in my humble opinion.

Galgo, check your gap between the spring retaining arm and your rail, if it's not 1/4" - 5/16" tweak it up a tad.........

That's about the most logical diff.............Hope it works out for ya!

Bowjax - bolt retainer.jpg
I used a big bow jax with the bottom 2 legs cut off. This rubber is the best sound deadening rubber I've seen. But like awshucks said, it may be the case that your retainer could do with a slight tweak away from the rail.
