Sacrifice some corn and spread a bunch under the feeder, just do not make a pile, spread it out so it takes all rodents, birds and deer some time to eat it up, and I would also stay out of the area for a while to keep your scent away.

Sometimes takes a while. You might try some different Deer attractants around it until they start. Once they get used to it they will come regularly. But then you must keep it filled regularly to keep them around and not go somewhere more fruitfull to the herd. Took a few weeks and scentkiller as well as a couple different attractants to get them coming to mine. Now its a routine stop for them and Turkeys. Coon's, well they are a pest best dealt with other ways!! They will eat all of it continuos until you can persuade them to stay away a bit more!

mix some black magic deer cocaine in your corn or throw a couple of cups on the ground under your feeder it has a very strong sweet aroma. every time you check your feeder throw a .cup down.

Just posted a new thread with the first visitors at my new Pennco feeder.
Coons!

I've fed corn for years now and it's usual for the squirrels, coons, and birds (including turkeys) to use it first. The deer will soon catch on to the idea it's free food for the first customers and start using it, too.

When I want to attract wildlife to a hunting stand I will scatter some common bird feed around an open area. The bird activity alone will draw a lot of attention to the site.

When setting up the feeder you left a lot of sweat and scent all over the site.
Something to think about is how much noise the feeder mechanism makes when dispensing feed. Once they get used to it, it will be like a dinner bell.

The colour of the barrel may be an issue. Don't know if you have black bears in your area but that barrel is black and has 4 legs. Breaking it up with some grey and brown paint may help.

Looked at the pics again and notice that the feeder is in a cluster of trees. Deer like easy escape routes and may be too wary of the location.

You may have to build a tripod out in a more open area and relocate.
Good luck.

I get bulk corn in 55 gallon drums. It is very heavy around 400 pounds. I use a boat winch to raise it up. Works good for me.

I make tripods out of prefferably 2*4*14 PT. They have to be clean (no knots). Drill a hole at one end of each, straight through one, then at angles through the other two so that when you put a large bolt through there the middle one will be straight and the outside ones will be at about 30 degree angles. Put a small piece of chain with a pully in the bolt at the top. Bolt on a small boat winch about 5 feet up on the middle one with small cable so the squirrels don't cut it. Ready to go for about $60. Don't put more than 100 lb in at the time though. Good luck! :)

I think a tripod is out of the question till next year then I may try to get something together on that note. If I do make a tripod how do you fill it? Do you have to take a ladder with you every time you fill?
The smell of the paint will be less offensive than human scent.
If you use a brush to paint then add some artificial vanilla flavour to it. Deer are curious.
As far as a tripod, if the property is yours just cut some trees of appropriate size for the legs.
Boat winch is a good idea for raising and lowering the barrel.
Be careful with the boat winch so the handle does not get away or severe injury may occur.
An atv with a winch would work as well.
I would not fill the barrel. I don't think there is a need to.

I'd give this a try too. Could be the coons and other critters are finishing up what's getting dispensed before the deer get any.

I hang spin feeders ever winter after deer season for Turkeys on my club. When I first put them up I take about 25/30 lbs. of corn in a bucket and walk from the feeder spreading the corn as far as I can throw it. I do this in 2 or 3 directions and the birds and deer usually cut one of the trails pretty fast. Once they find the feeder they will keep coming back.
