Old bow hunter gonna try the Axiom

Post by Nighthunter »

I'm a 57 year old bow hunter that was forced to put down my compound bow about 12 years ago due to shoulder problems. Until Texas recently made bow hunting legal, I thought my string hunting days were over so I'm planning on buying an Excalibur Axiom to hunt this year. Any advice on what bolt / broadhead combinations work the best with this model is very much appreciated. Also best performing bow string, add ons, etc. and best place to buy gear that improves performance... Does anyone build / sell complete bolts ready to go??? Your time and expertise will help this old timer save some time in getting the right equipment to hunt Whitetails this season. Thank you in advance!

I think the Axiom is a ready to go package unit, but am not sure. I know it comes w/ firebolt arrows and a Drop-Zone scope [non adjustable] If not provided, you will need boltcutter b-heads and a stringing aid.

I do know it will do what you want............Congrats and welcome to the forum..........

:D very good choice you made.(i have an axiom too). great bow.i would stay with the standard string for awhile, dryfiring is hard on the faster strings.boltcutter are great broadhead, and the 125 grain rage 2 are dead on too.you are going to want the s5,s string stoppers too.takes alot of the vibration out of the shot, and help's dryfiring.the cheek rest is great to have on,and if you have long arm's,the ex-tends for the stock help's to make it longer.welcome, and if you have more ? let know and the guys and girls are great here.

Thanks for the warm welcome and for the information!! You've already saved me a lot of money that I thought I would have to spend after reading reviews on this crossbow! What you've said makes sense and for now I'll stick with the stock bolts and just order some boltcutter broadheads and try to make the bow as quiet as possible, & try to be careful not to dry fire it. Looking forward to getting to know you all better in the future and I'll try to post pics of my future crossbow hunts... Thanks again, NH

Would be interested in learning more because I just ordered the S5 suppression kit and also a Sims Limbsaver kit. I want this thing as quiet as possible but not if it's going to reduce velocity. Is there a certain distance that the S5 dampers should be set back from the bow string? Also, will I need to purchase dissipator bars in order to install the S5 suppression system??? Thanks! NH

No you will not need the dissipator bars to mount a S5. Set the string up a credit card or two away from the rubber pads. Do not let them touch.

Thanks Robertyb! That's information I definitely need to know!! I really appreciate the advice. When I hurt my shoulder and couldn't use my bow any more I built a couple of long distance rifles and hunted long distance to maintain the hunting challenge. Took 1 Whitetail at 580 yds and 1 with a neck shot at 630 yds. Really looking forward to string hunting again...I appreciate your help!! Thanks again, NH

welcome to the forum. we are glad to have you on the DARK SIDE. you came to the right place if you are looking for advise and opinions. no shortage here. all I can say is this, if you need anything crossbow related, check with Danny Miller at Horizontal Archery in Sardis Oh. He is the U.S. warranty rep for Excalibur and knows just about everything crossbow related. As for quality bolts, there are several custom bolt makers on this site. BigJohn has quite a reputation on this site.

Welcome to the forum!

You picked a great crossbow to start with. My advice is to shoot it with the accessories that come with the package at first, then decide what add-ons you really feel a need for.

BTW - a crossbow is never going to be quiet. You can cut the noise level a little, but the best tactic is just plan on getting close (to deer) before you shoot.
Most of my crossbow kills are at under 20 yards, and at that range the noise isn't a factor.

Thanks Maine Hunter! I'm really looking forward to trying it out! So far I've determined that in addition to the xbow, I'll need Boltcutter broadheads, Dalton wax, Rail snot, a good target, and an Excalibur stringing aid. Anything else ????????
