Crossbow Paintjobs
Does anybody know of a paint that will not chip? I blacked out my phoenix using krylon fusion paint and twice the finish on the limbs has come off. Starting to regret that I ever did it.

You have got to clean the limbs really good, acetone works but I like lacquer thinner better. automotive paint works the best for me

Re: Crossbow Paintjobs
i used methyl hydrate to prep the limbs as it leaves no residue, and then i went to a hobby shop and got mini spray bombs that they use for rc car bodies(very thin flexible plastic) i sprayed the limbs and let them cure for 2 days. that was almost two years ago, still chip free.
as a side note i sprayed my stock with textured rocker guard and it makes for a really nice finish.

This is the automotive paint you want.
SEM Color Coat 15013 Landau Black
I got mine from our local auto supply. It has a flex agent in it and costs about $15 +/- and the flat black is perfect for your purpose. Prep is important as mentioned.

Re: Crossbow Paintjobs
You might give Excalibur a call as they now paint bows black; they may paint yours if you send it in, if not, they may advise you on what to use; don't get discouraged.
Re: Crossbow Paintjobs
Excalibur does not use paint on any of their crossbows.

Whats the best way to remove the previous layers of black spray paint without messing with the integrity of the limbs?

What kind of paint and how thick, sounds like you laid it on not necessary, acetone or lacquer thinner on a soaked rag should do it, don't submerge or let the limbs lay in it.

Re: Crossbow Paintjobs
i just painted my pink vixen to a flat black scheme.
i used krylon flat black.
the stock turned out awesome but the limbs chip easily.
i used the tool to re-attach the string and that chipped the ends badly.
oh well..
is there a difference between the right and left limb? i took them off for painting and i though i was carefull to keep the limbs separated so they could go back on the way they came off but i think i got them mixed up.
the right limb had a number "5" marked on it with a felt tip pen and the left had a 4.5. anyone know what these numbers represent?

Re: Crossbow Paintjobs
Excalibur test and sort limbs in matched pairs. they are numbered 1 - 5 in .5 increments if I remember correctly from the Excalibur tour one week ago. No set of matched varry more than .5. So, yor 4.5 and 5 are matched and the tiller will be perfect the way I see it.chuckster wrote: the right limb had a number "5" marked on it with a felt tip pen and the left had a 4.5. anyone know what these numbers represent?
Katherine Troubrige also mentioned less than a 2lb overall variation between 1 and 5. In all I think about 8-10 (marked 1-5) sets of matched pairs are produced by Excaliber daily.

Re: Crossbow Paintjobs
thanks Enormous!
now im guesing there is no difference from the right and left limb?
i put on a new string and it seems the tips are lower than the rail. the string seems to be more bowed than with the other string.. did i install my limbs wrong?

Re: Crossbow Paintjobs
There is no worry , you can put them on either side . The only mistake that can be made reinstalling the limbs is to have the tips pointing backwards >
