No Wax at all on string?

Post by BillK »

My dad and each bought new Excalibur crossbows from Dan Miller - an Ibex for my dad and a Vortex for me.

During the sale conversation - Dan very emphatically said he didn't want us putting anything at all on the string - especially the serving. His rationale is that the wax builds up on the trigger mechanism and makes a mess of it and that it's not worth it for the minimal longevity it adds to the string by doing so.

Just curious on other's thoughts. I know I always kept my Mathews Solocam string and serving waxed but this is my first experience with a crossbow.

We both really respect Dan and his opinions but not waxing the serving or string seems sort of extreme to me.

Thanks in advance!

The big picture is if you tell someone to wax it they may over wax and the wax may end up in the trigger unit and cause an unsafe condition.
If you tell someone to not wax the string the no unsafe condition can be created by wax.
My feelings are that if you can control yourself then wax the string. A soft wax like Dalton 2000 will go a long way in not causing grief.

I've always waxed mine and the serving will last about 25% longer than not waxing. I took my trigger apart after four years of shooting a waxed string and honestly did not see any wax build up.

Your call, the string will perform just fine without wax. However, with wax the serving will last longer.

Unless you go crazy with the wax, I don't see a wax buildup issue on the trigger.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

You've all heard of Rainman, Scott is considered Stringman because of the thousands of shots he's taken for me and Danny. Scott's pretty experienced in serving wear and may be under wear

If it makes you feel any better, Danny told me the same thing. Guess you just gotta decide for yourself. A lot of years of combined knowledge between Boo and Danny with differing opinions. As for me,being new to crossbows, I am currently going with the no wax approach on my first string. Maybe I will use wax on the second one and compare the length of use.

I am new to this as well for xbows. I wax my string but not my serving. I use a dry silicone on my rail to make it slick to prevent any wax build up from my serving.

I am no expert by far but i put on some conditioner a day or two before i shoot and wipe the serving with my fingers when i get ready to shoot because i have been guilty of over waxing and having build up on the rail.I also look at it like this ...its like a tire or the dash of your car...in time it will dry out so it needs something on it to prevent that...if im wrong then it wont be the first time

Or at least get a T - shirt made up advertising string wax that we could send him, maybe made of waxed cotton.

No wax for me!
Had a string on my bow for over 2 years, shot it a whole lot, never waxed it. It got rained on, snowed on, left cocked for days on end.. Got tired of looking at it and gave it to a friend, it went on his Max for a year. He just gave it back a couple weeks ago and it looks the same as when I first got it.
No wax and keeping the serving in great shape prolongs the strings life in my experience.

Its simple - If you are getting wax into your trigger you are putting on way to much. Same goes for rail lube, having a toothpaste size bead of lube along the rail gives no more lubrication than a thin smear tht you can bareley see. It just end up where it shouldn't and is a waste of money.
I clocked up over a couple of thousand shots from constant target shooting in my first year. Opened my trigger up to polish the latch and check the trigger box out. There was no wax to be seen at all :!:
The problem is everyone has a different idea of how to wax a serving or lube the rail. I've seen people literally large lumps of wax all down there rail etc, and of course when they eventually have a trigger problem "the wax is the cause of it" not the guy who's burried the crossbow in wax
