swimming tree rats

Post by munch »

almost forgot to mention i saw one of the strangest things ever while moose hunting. my son thinks its nothing but new to me
we where sitting on a beaver pond when i see a red squirrel playing around on the other side he ran down a log sticking out in the pond and when he reached the end he dove off as if he had done it a hundred times before. i watched him swim across then out of the water and right up a tree near where we sat. don't know if anyone else has ever seen this but it was a new one for me

I've never seen them swimming, but it's been well documented that squirrels swim. Can't remember the author, but in a book I read once they were talking about a mass squirrel migration. There were literally thousands of squirrels seen swimming the Ohio River between KY & OH and KY & IN

Don't remember when or where, but I know I read something about squirrels migrating once.

Never seen a squirrel swimming around here, except maybe after he had been shot. Probably too many gators in Florida. Smaller critters make it a habbit to stay out of the water. :)

That would be cool to see. I'm no squirrel expert but I've never heard of that either??

Recall as a kid where they swam the Mississippi into Mn after a nut failure on the other side. Lots of em. They can and do swim.

I've seen them over the years on the French River. Made the mistake of "helping" the first one by offering it a hand into the boat. Lets just say I'll never do it again. Lol.

Let them swim.

I have seen squirrels swimming in the mountain lakes we troll for trout in here in Western NC and East Tn.....they can hold their tails up and keep them dry...seen a deer running from dogs, hit the lake and swim out a ways and just float around....looked like it was just being still and actually floating. This was in winter, after deer season and we must have trolled by it 5 or 6 times and all we saw was it drink water...moved on and it was still there when we left.
