Arrow Problem - It changed color

Post by nchunterkw »

I shot 1 arrow last night out of my Vortex and when I went to get it it had changed color to RED. :D

Nothin' major just a small NC deer, but I'm happy to be "on the board". As a part of "Backyard Bow Pro", once I finish processing this, it will help feed people here in NC.

You can learn more about BYBP here. It is a growing organization, and very worthwhile and rewarding.

No pics.....but here's the details.

Got off work at 4:15 and had a 30 min drive home. Had showered with my scent free soap in the am, so after a quick change I ran out to some public game lands close to home. Parked the truck and made the qtr mile hike to a spot I had pinpointed a few weeks ago with the GPS. It was about 4:50pm. I was standing there contemplating whether to stay there or haed another 1/2 mile up the trail when I saw what I thought was a flicker or something in a thicket about 50 yards away. Bow was not cocked, backpack was on my back, quiver still on the bow, and no ghille suit on. Looked through the scope and saw 1/2 and ear and an eye. Deer! OK calm down it's in a thicket....so I ease my pack off, get the rope cocker and get the bow cocked and an arrow installed. Get the top of my Leafy wear suit on and then my dew-rag and head piece. Get the quiver off the bow. No sign of the deer. I saw it moving around but didn't see it run off or anything. Of course with all the foliage it could have just walked away and I never would have seen it. So I move from the spot I was at, about 15 yards to a better vantage point, and take my range finder with me. I sit down between two 18" tall ferns hoping to blend in. I decide not to push it and hope it's still there and will work my way - which I have seen deer do from this stand before. After about 10 minutes I see another flicker so I know it's still there. 20 minutes after that if finally starts working towards me. I had ranged a tree at about 30 yards and it is working a few yards behind that. I guestimate 35 and don't want to take that shot offhand - even though I am sitting. The deer keeps coming and finally presents a broadside shot at what I guessed was about 27 or 28 yards. So I put my 30 yard sight low on the deer, like for a heart shot and let her fly. I hear the smack and the deer falls straight over. Turns out it was more like 24 yards and at a decent downhill angle. I hit behind the shoulder but high. Took out the top of ther lungs, but also hit the spine. The deer was on it's side with all of my arrow sticking straight up in the air. It was now 5:35 pm. I packed up, punched my tag, made the phone call to check it in and headed down to it. That took about 10-15 minutes. The deer was expired so I pulled out my arrow. It went all the way through with only the fletchings staying in the offside hide. I guess because I hit the spine. A quick bit of field dressing (the Butt-Out tool works great by the way) and a quick qtr mile drag and I was in the turck heading home. Since the temp was in the 80's I skinned it, took off the front shoulders/legs, cut out the backstraps and tenderloins, and the hind quarters and then picked the rest of the carcas for burger meat and got that all in the refrigerator by 7:30. I'll finish cutting it up this weekend and get it in the freezer. After that my son and I headed to the place we are going tonight and put out some more corn. All in all a good ending to a rather crappy day at work.

Thanks everyone. And Hester...yes it's great when it works out that way. Tonight was the opposite. Deer came into the field from the same edge I was sitting in. It was almost on top of me before I saw it (~7 yds). BUSTED! but that's part of the game when you hunt from the ground. It is kinda funny watching them almost do a backflip at that yardage whenthey see you. Still it just circled in behind and stood there snorting for 5 minutes or so. So maybe only half busted. I'll leave that spot cool off for a few days.
