Deaf Jeff
I have had the pleasure of Deaf Jeff staying at my place and taking him hunting. I met his brother halfway between his place and mine and pickup up Jeff.(He is legally blind in his right eye and cannot drive) He lives 70 miles south of the Mackinaw bridge. I live the last town in the western end of the U.P.
We checked the stands I put out and found lots of deer showing up but no big bucks. Jeff shot his Excal on Sunday afternoon and after a couple of shots his scope died. Luckily I had an identical scope. So I was able to get him back in business> He has a real hard time seeing crosshairs, he tried other scopes but had a hard time seeing multiple dots as none of the scopes had a big enough tube. So a few years back I gave him a Leupold Gilmore and it works great for him as it has only one red dot and a rheostat so he can regulate the brightness to see Opening morning we saw nothing . That evening Jeff skimmed the back of a big doe. Not only is Jeff deaf he is legally blind and what little sight he has is limited to his left eye He shoots right handed so David at Wyvern and I colaborated to make a special mount so he can shoot right hand but look with his left eye. Jeff's balance and ability to walk is also very bad so it is a challenge for him to hunt.
We didn't hunt second morning but went that evening. A big bodied deer cane in so fast that he wasn't there and 10 seconds later there he was. I saw he had some horns but his head was down Jeff took aim and shot, He shot high, but it was a perfect hit in the spine. The deer dropped in it's tracks. That was nice for me as I didn't have to track and the drag was real short. When we got out of the blind and walked to the deer we saw it was small 5point set of antlers. Needless to say Jeff was very happy.
He lives in an area where there are not many deer, He has seen more deer since he has been here than he has seen in the last 4 yrs at his place.
Needless to say I am very pleased that he has ventured here to stay with me and hunt. Also happy he has been successful. Now I am trying to put in the right spot so he can fill his second tag.

Re: Deaf Jeff
Great story. In this time where deer are judged solely by the score of their rack, number of points, width of spread, and so forth, its easy to forget what hunting is really all about.
Re: Deaf Jeff
Congratulations to both of you. That's the kind of stories I like.
Hope someday in the not to distant future I have someone like you to help me out in the woods.
