Scope adjustments maxed out

Post by miller1buc »

Just went out with my new Ibex and the first shot went sailing over the bag .. So I took aim again thinking I may have pulled off (a whole bunch) but same result. Went to 10 yards and was shooting 6 inches high there. Made adjustments and went back to 20 yards and still hitting high. Elevation wont turn anymore and still shooting about 1.5 inches high at 20 yards. Same for windage with it still shooting about an inch right maxed out.

Setup:
Firebolts, 125 grain field tips, factory dacron string, Fixed power scope with the SMF package

Any ideas why the adjustments are maxed out already before reaching zero?

I'd double check and make sure the rings are clamped to the base correctly, then make sure all the screws/bolts are tight.

Yeah, it is attached solid and correctly to the base. No wiggles or anything that I can see.

if youve checked all your screws it may just be a bad scope. another trick ive used is to loosen all 4 allen scope base screws and lift up lightly on the end and screw the 4 allen screws back down. these are the allen screws on the side of the base mount itself. there was slight play in my scope base. locking it down with the front of the base lifted gives you a little extra moa.

Without seeing the bow it is hard to tell . But here is a few things to check . Maybe you already have . :)
: are both scope rings mounted the same way . ie the fastening nut is on the same side on both.
: does the front of the scope seem to be pointed down at a angle . When the scope is pointed down it forces the bow up.
The reason for the first question is that would be a reason for max`ed windage .

Another remedy for maxed out in elevation is a shim under the front of the scope .

Yep, fasteners both are on the right side. It doesnt seem to be pointed down much if any.

Since both directions are maxed I think I may have a bad scope out of the box.

I just had the exact same problem when trying to use one of the high end crossbow scopes. The vertical adjustment maxed out with the POI 8" high at 20 yards. I re-installed my Vari-zone scope, (I should have never changed it in the first place), and the POI again was dead center at 20 and 30 yards. Live & learn!!

I believe that if you put a thin metal shim under the forward scope mount base that will fit between the scope barrell and the base then it may give you enough adjustment range for your vertical. You could try a piece of feeler gauge material that would bend and form to the mount radius. This is of course after you have rechecked all of the screws and mounts. Hope this helps and let us know the outcome.

If it were mine I'd contact Excalibur for advice. A shim might cure the problem, but it's not like an Excalibur crossbow to need such adjustments.
Every new Excalibur I've ever set up was very close to zero with new parts right out of the package! Attach the scope base, attach the ring bases, install the scope, and normally you are "on paper" at 20 yards with the first arrow.
If it's that far off something isn't up to Excalibur standards IMO.

I completely agree it is a scope that needs replaced . But with many wanting to hunt it is a question of when . The shim is a temporary fix for a permanent problem .
My advice because you do not have a home under your avatar . Either send/bring it to Excalibur if in Canada or drop Mr. Miller a line in USA . :)
