Phoenix broadhead/arrow combo??

Post by jay73 »

Just picked up a Phoenix that came with Excal's Firebolts. It has a Vari-zone scope on it. I put my 100gr Thunderheads on and I am getting very inconsistent groups even at 20yds(shot 4 arrows). All bolts/screws are tight and the varizone is set slightly over 300.

I get tight, tight groups with my old Exocet/drop-zone at 30, different arrow combination(aluminums).

What arrow/broadhead combos are getting good groups with this bow? I really want to keep my Thunderheads.

Or is there anything else I am missing maybe?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have not yet read any posts here of members getting good accuracy out of their Excaliburs using Thunderheads. I could net get them to fly consistant either. I may suggest dropping them.

Well that's not what I wanted to hear. And it's certainly not the case with my Exocet. It shoots them well(Thunderheads). With aluminums, that is.

The faster those Thunderheads fly the more they plane! Slower older models don't produce fps that newer models do.

Has anyone had any issues with the Firebolts? A friend of mine has had consistency issues with them in the past. Was thinking of going to Gold tips instead. I don't have a whole lot of carbon arrow experience.

Go with the GTs... Spent the better part of the past two weeks trying to tune my Firebolts. In my opinion they are junk.

Bein nosey here have you tried alum. arrows ? I do shoot carbon but also i use n shoot alum. arrows. I have had a good many carbon arrows break inside tick toters & its not to me liking to pick shards of carbon out the meat

Funny you should mention that Vixenmaster. I very briefly shot carbons in my older Exocet many years(8ish)ago. I had one bust in a deer back then which caused me to return to aluminums.

I have had this Phoenix for just 2 days. So I've had very little experimenting time thus far. It came with carbon arrows, so that was my starting point. The previous owner shot them with G5 Montecs with accuracy. I may try to find those heads or maybe try Boltcutters. I'm just trying some research before I drop a bunch of cash "experimenting".

I would not be opposed in the least to go to aluminums with this bow as well. That is a very realistic option for me.

Anther thing about 2216 shafts, you can take 5/16" round steel & cut it & glue n push ahead of yer insert fer more weight. Thats how i build me logs that weigh up to 1000 grs, jus in case i run up on a wild chicken or possum that needs lots of killin power!

I shoot 2117 arrows 110gr. brass/125gr. THeads 4"feathers. Use this setup for deer and turkey (no problem) They fly great out of my Pheonix and the wifes Vixen. I've read alot of negatives of THeads out of Xbows ???

Shoot GT's with brass inserts and 100 grain Slick Trick Mags.

arrow should be in the 405 grain weight all up.

Thank me later.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I will start with the arrows I've been using with my Exocet (2216's & 100gr Thunderheads) and go from there.

I also have a Phoenix and could not get tight groups with fixed blade broadheads. I switched to the rage mechanical and I now get tight groups.
