Spike Buck & Doe - First Double!

Post by tman74 »

Got to my acreage with a friend Sat morning and after gearing up, we made a slow tip toe back to a couple of stands at the back of the property. My friend set up at the edge of the field in a corner where dense bush and field meet. I set up approx 250 yds north just inside the hardwoods in another faithful stand. On my into the bush I heard the sound of a deer bounding off to my right, then stopped. I pulled my grunt call and gave a soft grunt...a few more bounds and away it went. I began to creep closer to my stand when I heard another deer to my left. Same routine and away it went. Finally got into the stand and settled in for the wait. At approx 7:45 I can hear a deer walking down in a gully off to my right and it sounds like it's coming my way. A couple minutes later he pops over the hill and is slowly walking in my direction, and at 16 yds he stood broadside for a couple of minutes browsing. When he turned his head to look in the opposite direction I set the crosshairs on both lungs and pulled the trigger. He didn't go 30 yds and went down and thanks goodness he ran towards the field. Texted my friend, got in and out with the deer asap as my friend stil had a tag and I wanted him to hunt this spot in the aft/eve. It's incredible how heavy a little spike feels when you have to drag him 500 yds through a plowed field...lol. Buck was taken with my Excal Vixen and Slick Trick Mags (obsene blood trail).

Fast forward to the aft. My friend and I switched stands that aft and things were very quiet until approx 5 pm. I was day dreaming about the tasty little chops that the spike will yield when I heard when I heard a "THONK" come from the back bush and the sound of deer scattering through the woods. I waited patiently for the signal (whistle) and sure enough it came. Excited as heck I made my way to my friend who explained what had happened and it sounded good. 4 does came in and he shot the largest one. 3 bolted bolted uphill, the one he shot went downhill. She paused just before going over the hill he could hear weezing/gurgling noise. After a blood trail that petered out I found her at the bottom of the hill approx 20 yds from the river. Let's just say it was the most labour intensive retrieval I have ever experienced. 2 hrs later we got her to the van. My firend snapped a pic of me with the doe then his battery died. I have one with him on my phone and will post it later, but for now it's my ugly mug.

She was a nice big doe. Doe was taken with a Excal Phoenix and Spitfire broadheads at 15 yds. One of the best hunts I've had in years, and my first archery double.
