First Crossbow deer

Post by Chuck AA »

This is an account I sent to my buddy.

Hey Grandpa

Put in a few hours bow hunting in my stands.
Went out Sunday morning about 6:50 am (not hillbilly time at 6:50 pm) and Sandy said you are going to freeze why are you going out. I said well you never know it only takes two minutes sometimes, so I will go for an hour.
So walking into the blind area I am about 10 yards from my pop up blind going to my tree stand and a deer takes off. I stop and it stops. We had a staring contest for about 3 minutes. I said to myself, well if I walk it is going to take off and it is about 80 yards away, too far for the bow shot and you can barely see it because the beaver hay is about 4 feet tall.
So I decide to walk a few steps and see what happens. It just kept looking in my direction. By now I was near my pop up blind which would block me from his view so I used that to gain another 3 yards or so.
He was still looking from where I was originally, so I walked again slowly to get within bow range. He stepped around so he was dead on, so not a good bow shot (but good with a .300 mag LOL), then he quarters away in the opposite direction of what a good bow shot is for a lung- heart shot.
Remember all I can see is the head. So I creeped up another few yards.
Put the sling of the bow under my left arm to steady it (actually been practicing this everyday on the target to unload my bow ) and let him have it using the 50 yard mark on the scope.
He dropped like a ton of bricks ( just like when you shoot with a .300), which I was not expecting as from what I have heard bow shot deer run a bit before they expire. So I could hear him thrashing and did not wait as you are told to do for them to just die. I walked up to him and I guess when the bolt when through the ribs and lungs it angled up and spined him as well.

I put another bolt right through the neck to put him out quick but he was already coughing up all his lung blood ( quick death). It was pretty exciting (the hunt part, the actual kill is kind of sad as you know). So I was gone about 15 minutes from the house as I had a smoke and a cup of cocoa before going back to the house for some knives.

That Equinox bow certainly gives a good group and a wallop even at 50 yards through the beaver hay. So all in all a small buck with a couple of little spikes, probably like you and Tony got, but I am happy with my first crossbow deer.
