S5 string shock suppression system review

Post by Joshua 24:15 »

Good day Friends,

Ok...I asked in earlier posts about the S5 system, now I am able to provide my own review.

I just recieved the S5 system. I shot several arrows prior to installing the S5 system and shot several arrows after installation of the S5 system. I then removed the S5 system and repeated the process again—verifing my findings and providing clear and sound observations.

The S5 system did not quiet the Vortex or take shock out of the firing process. However, the S5 system clearly settled the Vortex quickly after arrow flight. Thus, distinctly shorting the length of noise and vibration. Without the S5 system, there is a distinct resounding noise that occurrs immediately after arrow flight from the arrow deck. The S5 system stops this resounding noise. To sum it up, I find the S5 system not to stop the noise or vibration the Vortex has but to noticeably stop the length of which the noise and vibration occurs. So if you want to quiet your XBow quicker, the S5 system is the way to go if you can justify the cost of the S5 system.

The S5 system was very easy to install. The machine work was very clean and well made. The S5 system came in a black matte finish—not what I ordered. I wanted the S5 system to match the arrow deck and riser. I mention this so that you are aware of it if you order the S5 sytem and expect it to match the arrow deck and riser of your XBow.

Lastly, I found the area where the S5 system is mounted complicates cocking of the Vortex. Note: with reps the XBow will become easier to cock but not as easy as without the S5 system.

So... if you want to quiet the XBow quicker and can find a good price on the S5 system, I would recommend it.

These are my observations. I hope this helps.

I wouldn't go without mine but I found string silencers and a heavy arrow do more to quieten the Vortex more than anything else.

for me the biggest noise reducer is cat wiskers... you may loose a few FPS but
with the wiskers,S5,some shrink wrap on the retainer and camo tape on the stirup..the noise is completly gone  ..not realy but it is greatly reduced.. :D

In all of my yrs usin Excals i found that the BH & arrow made the most silence with Tick Toters & the S5 seems to be a good option!

I bought my S5's shortly after they hit the market and they are the same colour as my Vortex riser. I prefer it to the black also. I do find that the S5 took alot of the "twang" out of the shot.

What a great review. Any doubts i may have had re: installing the s5 on my Axion are not relevant anymore. I recognize there will always be some noise, but i like to shorten the time the noise is made. :D

Cool video to show what these add-ons take a beating from! Would love to see the S5 in a video like this, or heck even some comparison videos to check time to stop movement vs a naked bow, etc.

The amount that the scope and mount move at the shot is amazing! I guess that explains why the crossbows are pretty hard on scopes.

I feel the biggest advantage of the S 5 is the protection it offers on a dry fire it is sure to absorb a lot of energy on a dry fire.

I just received and installed mine. Agree on disliking the black color, but not a big deal. I was also surprised that they extend to about halfway between the brace height marks. I needed to shorten the excel string anyway, since it had stretched to be about even with the front marks. I was surprised though that I had to put about 25 turns on the string to get it to be about 3/32" off the S5's, which puts the string just ahead of the rear brace height mark. Is this consistent with everyone else's experience?

I'll put a few bolts downrange tomorrow before work...see how much difference it makes...

I somewhat agree with your observations. From day one I have used the FFF string on the vortex and it adds to noise and vibration. I would read what Hester0305 and Vixenmaster say about arrow weight and noise/vibration. I started using the 175 gr. slick trick magnum. With the other arrow components ended up with atotal weight of about 469 gr. I immediately noticed quite a drop in buzz and noise. Overall accuracy across the practical range of xbow improved. FFF string has mini whiskers so I am going to remove S5 and see what I get.

Added the S5 this fall and when I shot it right after it's installation my friend said that it made a world of differance. I also have wiskers on my Boo String and shoot GT's at 405 gr... My hearing is not so good but it impressed my buddy to the point that he wants one for his 10 point-GT Mag. then found out they don't make one for it. Told him to trade in for an Excal... I believe it helped, probally both the Vib. time and the decibell level reduced. What would prove it are tests showing readings before and after installation...

As I have commented on this topic in several places, the s5 is a waste of money if you are wanting to make your bow less noisy. For that purpose they are a $30 paperweight.

The only real purpose I can see for keeping them on is in the event of a dry fire. Other than that ... worthless.
