R.E.D.S. for Matrix355 -the learning curve-
Can anyone tell me if the rubber bumpers on the S5 system are the same as on the Matrix R.E.D.S.? Obviously the mounting system is different but are the bumpers the same.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: R.E.D.S. on Matrix355
Much appreciated.
A 5/16 rod and a set screw should make the installation complete then.
I'll get a set of replacement bumpers ordered -think I saw them for about $15.

The S5 has a big ball around 3/4" ball on the end that fits into the bumper.
Some people just like stepping on rakes
Re: R.E.D.S. on Matrix355
Woops...
...At some point it isn't going to be cost effective
THANKS
If'n you can would you confirm exactly what we have there? I have a metal lathe but turning a ball with a manual lathe is not an easy proposition. Maybe a tapped metal ball on a threaded rod?Boo wrote:The S5 has a big ball around 3/4" ball on the end that fits into the bumper.

Sorry BOO for not being clearer.Boo wrote:How would you like me to clarify?
Short of purchasing a set of rubber bumpers and cutting one in half to see exactly what the molded shape is inside of it is, it would be helpful to have micrometer dimensions of the factory pin.
You had said previously, "The S5 has a big ball around 3/4" ball on the end that fits into the bumper." Would like to get the correct size to see if I can fabricate pins that will fit the bumpers correctly before ordering them.
Thanks for your patience

The ball is .75 and is necked down on the back side to around .400 x.13 then it shoulders up to around .780

You don't know me very well do you? The ball is around 0.7500000000000000000" or 3/4" in diameter. There is a melplat that measures 0.40000000000000" but I would suggest that you cut the ball so that it is much wider. How wide? Good question. The wider your melplat the longer your bumpers will last because it will leave an air pocket making for a bigger cushion as well as a wider surface that the rubber bumpers get pinched on. You could cut the ball in half for that matter. I been in on some experiments and it seems the more you cut the longer they last. Our tests are neither scientific nor are they conclusive. Note the words seem.TheTinker wrote:Sorry BOO for not being clearer.Boo wrote:How would you like me to clarify?

The neck measures 0.404"

That would be the flange that supports the base of the rubber bumper. The wider you make it the longer the bumpers will last. Make it the full diameter of the bumper.LongCarbine wrote:it shoulders up to around .780

Tinker if you have a .375 radius tool the front side would be easy . on the back side groove it down to .4 and back .750 then turn your .375 radius tool upside down to do the back side. Or a .75 ball with a 3/8 tapped hole in it and a tapped thick washer for the back side shoulder would work .
Hope this helps.Jim

Tinker,
I am not mechanical like you; however, I am enjoying this thread.
Could you explain in layman terms what you are doing with this project?
What are you trying to improve on?
If you have the time ... thanks.
All the best.
