OT home made fly reel

Post by groundpounder »

Fly fishing has definitely become my sport to be. It has been a while since I have tinkered in the machine shop but lately I have had the itch. I just completed making this all aluminum fly reel. I came up with an open bore design which I have never seen before. I have the spool riding on two o-rings that are turned into a tube. This tube is made into the frame all being one piece. The end of the tube is threaded and I made an aluminum knurled nut to hold the spool on. The drag system is that of a click and pawl. There are teeth that are recessed and cut into the backside of the spool and a nylon plastic pawl or clicker that engages into the teeth. This is only a 3 or 4 weight reel so a sophisticated drag was not necessary. Alot of file work and polishing to finish it off and this is what I have come up with.

Now just to add some line and take it to the river!

Going to guess around 40. I did make a drawing before starting but a few things changed along the way which took some extra time. Also several hours just in filing and polishing. The main machining to get what looks like a reel is pretty quick. Its everything else thats so time consuming.

I did not know that the riser changed? Will the GP mount not fit anymore? Have not really thought about getting back into production on the mount.

I saw a post by Munch that said his mounts would fit the Matrix.

Not yet Wabi. Just finished polishing it today. Haven't even put line on it yet. I might be able to give it a spin some time next week.
