arrow shaft cleaning and adhesives

Post by jody5252 »

greetings... ugh! cleaning quick set glue from carbon shafts. 6 done, 8 more to go. used denatured alcohol to see if it would soften old glue, not much help. a lot of elbow grease is the only thing that seams to work. :? is there anything that can be used to help remove old glue, that will NOT cause any damage to carbon shafts? also, what glue to use on flex fletch vanes? (silent knight 3") I have gorilla glue (blue cap) label reads not to use on polyethylene or polypropylene, would this glue damage vanes? also have goat tuff high performance. am not sure which to use. thanks...

really... I always thought acetone was not good for carbon shafts. will have to try it... I do use comet after I get most of the "junk" off that does very well. seems that vanes stick better with surface roughened up a little... thanks

Be careful with the acetone. Crazy glue and acetone are not a good combo.
You won't get good adhesion with that glue and an acetone prep.
When all else fails read the directions that come with the vanes of choice.

That's ethanol which you can not drink, because it is not clean enough for drinking. It is only for technical use.

Try some MEK, it has less oil in it than anything else on the market, I use it to clean shafts and vanes, never had an issue with MEK doing any harm to carbon or vanes. I use Easton glue, to remove scrape, scrape scrape, super glue remover will help soften it up but that is just another step.

If you want MEK just go to a store that sells plumbing supplies and buy a can of plastic pipe cleaner.

I have been using MEK for the past 20 years or so. I advise using it outside with the wind at your back. It is strong stuff. Do not get it on yourself either.
