Matrix 355 vs Vortex chrono results

Post by timbikeride »

I was curious how much faster the 355 actually was over the Vortex. The Vortex had an Excalibur Flemish string and STS. The 355 had the stock Matrix string and REDS. Both strings were set about a string width from the rubber bumpers.

Gold Tip Laser II 410 grain bolt 317.2 fps

Gold Tip Laser II 410 grain bolt 329.7 fps

I didn't have equipment to measure the sound level, but the 355 seemed a good bit louder than the Vortex. I guess nothing is free so the 355 generated more noise in return for the greater speed.

Later I didn't have a Vortex handy, but did try the 355 with a 350 grain bolt. It averaged 341.7 fps. I know I lost a little speed with the brace height being higher due to the REDS, but I'd still say this particular model was a little off the 355 claim to fame. A 393 grain bolt averaged 334.6 fps.

Other than being obviously more compact the Matrix 355 doesn't hold anything over the Equinox in the speed department.

When I had my Shadow-Zone scope it was set on 330FPS using 20" firebolts with 150 grain points and Excalibur's Flemish Dyna flight string. Life was good.

Now life is awesome! I couldn't be happier with my Leupold VX-I 2-7x33mm scope with Dan's (xcalibur) BCY Force 10 custom Flemish 3 color string and my same arrows and tips. My hits and much higher/faster then the Excalibur Flemish Dyna flight string.

I can get advertised speed all day long with stock string and Diablo arrows on my Matrix 355. That is with two different chrono's even.
And I've been testing and shooting the Matrix Bows till I'm blue in the face. Hmmmm.....

I'm sure crossbow limbs are just like horizontal bow limbs. Not all limbs are created equal. I know from years of fooling with compound bows that one XYZ's 70lb bow might come in at 68 lbs and another at 72 lbs. Your 355 may hit 355 fps, but one or a dozen others might not.

Chronographs will vary from one to the other. The way a chronograph is used can also influence speeds.

I agree on both points about limbs and chrono's. That's why I use two. However the Matrix 355 does make advertised speed. The 380, not so much.

I got 351 fps max out of Matrix 355 with 350grain arrow (f1 chrony). Also tried 26 strands astro flight, force 10, dynaflight 97 endless loop strings, not much of speed gain. I was getting 323fps with 394 grains out of my Vortex with FFF string...and 333-335fps with 395 grains out of Matrix 355...It's about 10fps gain over Vortex/exocet 200.

John,

YOUR 355 and some others may makes advertised speed. Mine, evidently Milan's, and I'm sure others do not. I've never complained about it or any other bow not reaching advertised speed or stated IBO. I was just sharing my results. Saying the Matrix does make advertised speed is no more accurate than saying it does not make advertised speed (which I never said).

IMO . The matrix bows are so much more user friendly and feel so much better shooting the speed don't matter so much. I still like them because of the smaller frame. That's just me !

Not a problem.
I hope you enjoy your Matrix, and have fun testing and Target Destroying!!! If you want to keep the fastest speeds, stay with the Stock String that came with it. :) And stay close to the bumpers, 1/16"in. only. Or if your shooting a Matrix 355 the REDS do not need be installed, and keep brace height to barely 7/8"in.. Then re-test.

My 380 Blackout shoots 350fps through my chrono all day out of the box that's with the Diablo arrow and the 150gn field point for a weight of 403.5 but like said, chronos are all different, I shot mine in my house with regular light bulbs but was told to shoot it outside on a cloudy day would be the best...I have since adjusted my string to about 1/8th from bumpers but have not shot it yet that way. Maybe I'll p/u 5-10 fps who knows until I get out to shoot again.

That's a fairly heavy arrow your pushing. :)
If you used a stock Diablo with 100 gr. head, you would still be over the 350 gr. advertised.
I think the closest I came to 380 was 373 fps.
Switching to a heavier 390 gr. arrow made the Bow shoot much smoother and tame.
I believe my first reaction to buying the New Matrix Bows was their Compact size. It was a perfect change Excalibur initiated! The Speed was second.
