New cooler

Post by UPSMAN »

I'm looking through my stack of catalogs for a new cooler. Need some of you to tell me, am I just a cheap a$$ or do you think 280 dollars for a 35 qt. YETI cooler is robbery.I'm actually looking for a 65 or 70 qt cooler. The YETI 65 is almost 400 dollars. Hell, for that price I could just buy a small refrigerator.

We also use the 5 day Coleman.

I try to plan ahead and freeze bottles of water (2 ltr, and regular 500 ml bottles). We drink them as they thaw and there's no water to drain, except a bit of condensation. When we have to buy ice I prefer to use the blocks when I can find them - they last longer.

We've been happy with the 5 day cooler so far - it does what we need it to do for the trips we take.

My friends that own the larger Yeti coolers are commercial fishermen that use them almost everyday. They save enough money by not having to buy ice all the time to pay for the coolers plus the Yetis last for years before needing replacement. I have considered buying one a few times but it is overkill for me so I content myself with the cheaper lines of coolers. If you use a cooler constantly as they do it is probably a very good investment. If you use a cooler a few times a year fishing and hunting for a week or two at a time it is probably not so good an investment.

They advertise how nice they are but I guess I would have to pass on one also thats a good bit steep for me for a cooler. I have several big coolers and they were a good bit less than $100.00 a piece.

I also have one of the 5 day coolers and it works great when possible I leave the drain plug open and it seems the ice lasts longer The water melts the ice faster

I have a couple of friends that have Yeti coolers. One was a present and the other was like a bonus at work. They both love them, but it just seems to me that a $400 cooler is more of a show-off thing than a necessity. :)

The Coleman 5 day is hard to beat. Used two to bring bear meat and skin/head back home from a Maine hunt. 3 days and still had ice. Drained a couple times a day. No problems at all. Plus they are cheap!!

Paul, I can justify spending good money on a quality weapon but 400 bucks for an ice chest. I kind of feel the same way about my crossbow. While flipping through a bass-pro catalog I came across a 10-point crossbow package. It was 2000 dollars, are you kidding me. I'd much rather have a matrix at half the price.

As much as I like to own quality stuff I`d have a real hard time dropping that much coin on a cooler. I know they`re supposed to be the best but the prices make me cringe.

On hunting and fishing trips, we use Coleman or Igloo coolers.
When in the bush for 7 days or more we bury the cooler up to the lid.
Place a piece of cardboard over top and cover with moss.
And leave the drain hole open.
7 days in the bush without issues.
Most coolers will do the job at hand with a little bit of help.

I added 1" quality insulation to the inside walls of a Coleman cooler with glue and sealed the mating edges with caulking. Ice lasted twice as long for a $10 investment and under an hour work with a cold beer.
