Bear Hunting in Ontario

Post by automated11 »

Well right around 3 weeks till my hunt in Ontario and was wondering if anyone from Canada that hunt black bear had any tips? Are you allowed to hunt on Sundays? I heard most activity is from 3-4pm till dusk, anyone see or shoot one in the morning or afternoon?

Thanks ahead of time,

Yup get prepared for the bugs. I'm sure you got em in pa but not like this. It's a bumper crop this year too with all the rain. Bug jacket, thermacell, deet, layers (mosquitoes easily bite through one layer but have trouble getting through two). Good luck and I don't know where you are going but try to fit in some fishing.

X 2 on the bugs! Bring your thermacell for sure! They do move in the mornings too and all day long. If your outfitter is using trail cams keep an eye on the times on the pictures. You never know, the big boy might be sneaking in earlier in the day. Sit still and don't move, they just appear like ghosts. Good luck!

The guide said to bring my trail cam with me, along with a laptop to view the pics. I purchased a bug head net for myself and father. I am also going to borrow my buddies thermocell. Will be hunting near White River, Ontario near lake Superior. I won the trip with the Mich Xbow Federation. Never been on a bear hunt where we could use bait so Im really looking forward to this! The guide is going to provide us a boat with a 9.9hp engine on it to use when ever we would like. He said there is alot of fish in the are.

pretty much all the fishing up there other than Lake superior is Pike/Pickerel (in Ontario Walleye are known as pickerel, especially up north). You can catch both trolling crankbaits & you must use steel leaders for the pike their teeth cut the line. there are brook trout in spots but those secrets tend to be more closely guarded, but the guide may be willing to do you right with a good spot.

P.S. roll the walleye fillets in batter and fry them.

To help judge the size of the bear-know the size of bait barrel or put flag tape on near by tree at different heights so you can tell the shoulder height.Sit tight and listen-they make little if any noise coming into bait.Once you hit your bear dont move and listen for death moan,it will stand the hair on your neck-but a welcoming sound that your bear is down
Good luck and let us know how you do

I have been hearing to shoot for middle of the middle on a bear, draw a imaginary line halfway up on the bear and draw one that splits the bear vertical from tip of nose to tip of tail. A lot of guides swear by this and have the most kills on bears this way. Has anyone tried this? Sounds like a liver / back lung shot but they say it really anchors the bears. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

Check a vitals chart to my knowledge bears have theirs farther back than what you would shoot for deer

Here is some good info
