Heading out to git me a bar! I'm baaaaack!

Post by agingcrossbower »

WoW, it was a great time and the Canadians were all friendly and great hosts. Terry and I hunted the first afternoon and got wind down pours and thunder and lightening. I stuck it out only to find out that bears do not like lightening at all and saw nothing. That was Sat. and Sunday morning we baited sites and headed out for the afternoon hunt. We hunted off a wilderness road about a quarter mile apart. I sat down at 3:30 and at 5:00 I saw my first action. My stand was roughly 70yards off the road and I had my back to it. I was just sitting there and heard nothing when a nose appeared to the right side of the clear shot window. It was a HUGE brown bear and I mean HUGE. When he walked his belly swayed back and forth and I am guessing he went way over 450. I thought let him get distracted with the barrel and food and slip an arrow in but he had other plans. He swaggered three or four steps and sniffed and then went on the opposite side of the barrel and looked into the barrel and then looked up and locked eyes on me. Boy, did they get big and he turned and took two steps and took off. There and gone. The ametuar learns a hard lesson. When the shot is there take it fast. Another bear came in the same way from behind me and let the same way. He was small and I got the game plan down that the bear were using the same way I came to the bait so I was ready. At roughly 5:30 I glance to my right and there out of no where a bear was sitting staring at the barrel. I slowly turned and brought my Camx up and looked through my Ecotech sight, took a breath and fogged up my glasses and sight. Dang the luck! Quickly got that fixed and shouldered again and the bear took a couple steps forward and I sent an arrow loose. He turned tail and ran for the road which put a smile to my face and soon I heard the death moan and it was over. She went maybe 25 yards. I found her and then found out how hard it is to drag a bear. Well, I gutted it and managed maybe 10 feet and gave up. ribboned a good path out to the road and also left a lumenock on to lead the way back. I started walking back to Terry's truck singing "old Susanna" so the bear hopefully would not try to eat me. When I got to Terry's spot I could hear him sayin NO BEAR, DOWN BEAR OVER AND OVER. I yelled are you OK, and he said yes and that he shot one but there were bear around him and one at the base of his tree. He said come here and I laughed and said, no you come here. Well I got some bear spray out of the truck and walked in and the bear Terry shot was at the bait with three arrows in it. Wish that I had a camera because it was a sight. Terry and I dragged the bear out and it took everything we had to do that. We then went back and got help. Here are some pics of the bears.

My bear was a cinnamon and weighed dressed 260 and Terry's was a black male and went 270.
Had a great time and hope you enjoy the story and pics. Aging
