Turned Another Arrow Red This Morning

Post by nchunterkw »

Man, it was a B-E-A Utiful day to be hunting this morning in North Carolina. A "cold front" moved in and it was only about 60 degrees when I went out at 6:00 AM. Hiked my way back to a pinch point I found last weekend and got setup beside a tree amongst some downed logs. About 7:30 I saw the slightest bit of movement about 60 yards to the south. It looked "deery" so I took a look with the scope and sho-nuff I saw an ear. Then I saw another one cross an opening. They kept crossing in and out of the creek bottom and the woods and finally the bigger doe started working towards me. She stopped at 20 yards with her head down behind a tree and quartering to pretty good. So I put the cross hairs right in fron of the shoulder and let fly. Heard the tell-tale thwack and watched her run off. She looked hit. It was 8:03. At 8:13 I went to look for my arrow and blood. She started bleeding within 2 yards of where she was when I shot her and I found the arrow about 6 yards beyond that buried 1/2 way in the bank. It had turned red. The blood was bright red and sprayed everywhere. I went back and packed up and messed around for another 15 minutes or so and then started a very slow tracking job. Thankfully it was a great hit. The blood trail was non-stop and she only went about 30 yards total. Where she was laying there was blood all over a 10 ft radius. The only bummer was that I was about a mile from the truck and I had to drag her all the way. Got that done, hung her up, skinned her out, and have the meat in big chunks in the "man-cave" refrigerator. Clothes are in the washer and as soon as they are done I'm gonna head out for the evening. Probably try to scout a new area. I have to take full advantage of the cooler weather.

Thanks..
I have been experimenting and building and re-building arrows trying to "recover" some older stuff that didn't fly right at one time or another. So I had a quiver full of old Horton bolts with different 125gr BHs. This one was an old NAP Thunderhead. Total wt was around 420gr - a little light for my taste but the deer here are smaller than up north. Arrow looks to be in good shape, but I'll have to refletch one that came loose. The BH looks good too but it will need touched up and shot at 40 yds to verify there is not a small bend in any blades. If I get a chance to upload the pic I will. I only took one (pretty bloody) that I texted to my wife as a wake up call.

Thanks everyone. All in all a good day. The afternoon hunt was uneventful. I bounced 1 while exploring some new area. Even though it was "cooler" it was still in the 70' s.
