Deer # 2 down

Post by Hester0305 »

I killed # 2 this morning but it wasn't what I expected it to be. I was hunting this morning when a deer slipped in to my right and was partially hidden from all the green leaves and vines hanging down everywhere. I looked at the deer and got one quick glance at the deers head and I said to myself thats a big doe. The deer took 2 more steps and was just about out of my shooting lane and I bleated at the deer and stopped it and sent a Slick Trick 100 gr. mag its way. I heard the arrow smack the deer and it bounded off into the Laurel thicket. I waited about 20 minutes and got down and retrieved my blood soaked arrow stuck in the ground and started a tracking job in the thicket. I found my deer about 125 yards later I hit the deer in the top of one lung and it exited just below the shoulder on the other side. I was really diappointed when I walked up to the deer and saw 2 horns on its head. I haven't shot a spike in a long time I try to kill 4 or 5 does for my meat deer and hold out for a nice buck to fill my buck tags. After getting over being aggravated at myself for not making sure it wasn't a small buck before I shot I thought for a moment and thanked the Lord for giving me the opportunity to be in the woods and be able to take and recover a deer

I received another surprise when I took my deer to the meat processor and spoke to his wife and she showed me the deer her husband had killed last week during black powder season on a piece of property about a mile away from the property I hunt. He killed the triple main beam buck that I had been hunting and had pictures of the last couple of months. I showed her all my pictures of him on my phone and she insisted I send them to her husband.I had him in my mineral sites while he was in velvet he was one of my 3 shooters that I was after. Maybe I can help grow some more good ones on my lease property and if only they wouldn't travel so far away.

Congratulations Hester - great job on the deer - AND on remembering where he came from in the first place! Enjoy it - or share with it someone who needs it.

Thanks guys I was really aggravated at myself at first but then I realized how blessed I was just to be in the woods experiencing all that God has created.

Vixenmaster, I know you'll looking to fill you're freezer again pretty soon when the right one walks by.

Bob, I love my Matrix also especially since I shorten it up a little bit. I put one of Danny Millers top quiver mounts on it and I like it even better. I have 3 great Flemish strings for it now don't really know when I'll wear the first one out just yet.

Good luck to each of you I hope you can put one down pretty soon

Congrats on your kill Hester! You aren't the only one to ever shoot a spike thinking it was a doe :)
