Summit Viper clanking when I walk

Post by Pydpiper »

Been doing some minor alterations to my Viper, making it a little more user friendly for hunting.
One problem I can not seem to get on top of is the clanking it makes as I work my way to a tree.
I managed to lose the top strap that binds the two pieces together for transport (the one that hold the upper part to a tree once settled in), so I replaced it with a bungee cord, with no better results.
I thought about a couple more bungees in different spots, but that could be cumbersome in the bush.
Is anyone else having that problem? If so, any suggestions on how to tame it?

May have to try it, even on just the parts that are contacting.
It's very difficult to figure out where the noise is, the thing is always behind me.. I suppose I could strap it on the wife and follow her for a minute or two.
It is a pretty obnoxious sound.

That's like asking how to make a bell quieter. The stand's construction is a fail to start with, one the worst I've ever had for noise, hollow noisy tubes.

Like others said, it's just a matter of figuring out what is causing the noise and then wrapping in foam and/or cloth camo tape.

I hunt with a couple other guys who use the same stand, and theirs doesn't make the noise mine does. It seemed to get worse when I added the side bags and rail wraps.
Not exactly stealthy the way it sits now.

This stuff works pretty good. It's foam backed camo tape, you can probably find something similar at a local sporting goods store. I put it anywhere the two halves touch, and on the top rail where the pad didnt cover the rail. Been on 3 years now, but I did have to reglue some of the edges with 3m super 77. You do need a strap though, it needs to be cinched together tight to keep the halves from moving around and clanking.

Awesome! Thanks, that looks like just what I need.
Still need to find the source, but the suggestions have been great.

It's made by Hunter Safety Systems, I just googled it and I dont think they make it anymore. I live fairly close to the HSS office/distribution center and I bought it there at the same time I bought my harness. PM me if interested, I've probably got enough to do another stand, be glad to send you some.

I've got a Summit Viper SD and have minimal noise. You definitely need to find what's causing the noise before you can fix it...just taking a shot in the dark otherwise.

Absolutely, I can tell by the sound it is hitting in two areas, symmetrical to my spine. I can also tell it is just a minor contact, but the problem is that it only does it when I am walking with it on, and that makes it very hard to see.
I made this post in hopes of someone pointing out the exact contact points, but I got a lot of good tips instead.
Motivation to fix it now is ten fold.

Cinch the two Summit pieces tightly with the cinch straps that you lost, they work best to hold the upper and lower together when walking quietly.

A couple things I found helped with my tree lounge was filling the hollow frame with expanded foam (changes the "clink" into a dull thud), and I use a pull strap or two to hold the two parts together. Once I am up in the tree you can also use them to ensure a a tight connection to the tree, and they can come in handy for pulling a deer out as well.

I remember a recent post about rubber dipping a stirrup like they do tools to reduce vibration. You could do the same thing with part or all of the bottom part of the climber which would not only take care of any metal to metal contact, but would also give it an awesome custom look.
