Use two rubber bands with expandables

Post by Aero320 »

Last week, I missed a clean, ranged, 40 yard shop. Missed deer completely. Later in the morning, I killed a buck at 21 yards. I am using Rocket Hammerhead 100aps that open up to a 2" cutting circle. Upon examining the entry and exit of the broadhead, it was obvious that the broadhead had expanded before it hit the deer but still produced a pass thru. That explains the clean miss at longer range. As a solution, I placed two rubber bands on the expandable and on the next kill, the broadhead opened correctly.

If the size is the same you could use the shrink bands that come on Swhackers. They pretty tuff and not stretchy.

Spitfire73 ...

I have used the Spitfires but I like the 2" cutting circle that the Hammerheads produce. You may be a better shot than me and I need that extra margin of error!

Actually you can dispense with ALL extra bands and in-flight deployment: Slick Tricks std or mags.

There is a large difference in quality between the dental elastics and the rubberbands that come with the broadheads.

There is also a difference in the thickness of the dental elastics, I use the thicker ones.

Using two of the elastics is OK, it works. However, using two o-rings is not recommended, especially in cold weather.

Be sure to research the differences . . .I highly suggest getting dental elastics . . .they are made to exact standards and are consistant.

Regardless of what you use, put fresh ones on before each hunt . . .they can dry out and become brittle. I keep my spares in a zip lock baggie and in a climate controlled environment.

Rather off topic, but, you guys know I can go into a three page rant on why expandables, even with their imperfections, are way better at killing deer than a fixed blade . . .and I have data to back up my claims.

With any equipment you use . . .you need to know how it works in order to optimize it's effectiveness.

I do like the Slick Tricks . . .mainly because they have a good amount of cutting surface. They are low profile and that helps with planing. However, even the Slick Tricks come up a little short of the large cut expandables in hunting conditions. But, they will do the job IF they are properly attached to the arrow.
