Muskoka Big Deer Contest

Post by OneShot »

I am happy to announce that I won the Muskoka Big Deer Contest , for the biggest doe in the combined gun and bow division ! It was a monster weighing in at 156 lbs ; the heaviest doe ever taken in the seven year contest history. At first she seemed lager than most doe taken by myself, but at the scale I too was shocked !
She was travelling with a huge 8 point buck; but as always well behind the doe, always stopping with obstacles in place for a clear shot. Well knowing a deer in hand is worth many more in the bush, I leveled my Excalibur Exomag to its liver - and let the bolt fly !
A twenty yard retrieval made me a happy hunter - leaving the buck for a great story I thought . After the weigh in at the depot and being too frugal to invest another $20 fee - accepting my fate , with still one tag in my pocket, a miracle happened.
That very same eight pointer appeared on my trail cameras
many times throughout the next days at odd times .Finally on the third afternoon he showed up 1/4 mile from where the doe was taken he presented a broadside shot.
Once again the Exomag found the liver and I watched as he stumbled about 50 yards and did a back flip, expiring In plain sight ! He was 229 lbs- eight lbs heavier than their winner in the big buck division!
My wife and I traveled back to Muskoka to accept the Biggest doe award and to share 'my what if' story of almost sweeping the Muskoka Big Deer Contest for 2013 !

What a great finish for a rainy trying season !!!!!!

I gave the doe to my hunting partner and kept the buck - grinding him up - except for the loin and back strap to be enjoyed on the barbeque with beer as it should be consumed !

Thanks one and all!

I was a lung shot kind of guy; but on more than one occasion would not get a complete pass through and ruined a lot of meat.
So switching to the liver still put a gapping hole from my 100 grain Wasp Jackhammer - 1 3/4 inch blades would have them bleeding quickly . Shorter retrieval more meat to eat !!
