Leupold Crossbones or VX-1 2-7x33mm LR???

Post by James Hutchison »

I would appreciate knowing any experience or opinions forum members have on either of these scopes. To be used on my Exomax estimated speeds 320 - 325fps. The crossbones is simple with correct speed settings and recticle is good 30,40,50,60. Does the VX-1 LR with the power setting zeroing the cross hairs dead on at 20 automatically put the vertical marks on at 30, 40, 50? The Xbones has a finer recticle than the VX-1, is this an advantage or dis for hunting conditions. Which would you choose? Thank You

The Crossbones has the correct subtensions for crossbow use while the VX-1 drops zones are set up for rifle bullet drops (example 100, 200, 300..yard). Parallax is also adjusted in the Crossbones for closer use at crossbow ranges. I suggest the Crossbones and Danny Miller appears to have the best price.

Thanks for the info enormous. Called Dan Miller and ordered the VX-1 2-7x33m with Heavy Duplex on his recommendation. Very informative 15 minute talk with Danny.

Actually the all new Vortex 2-7 HP is very interesting. My next look

Please share with us what benefit the VX1 has over the Crossbones other than being able to use it for your rifles.

I hunt in western Wisconsin wooded hills and farm fields. Hunting in woods I would not expect any shot more than 40yds maximum. My open field stands would give shots 40, 50, 60 yds. But I am 68 and old age taken some of my shooting skills so 40yds is my maximum. The xbones recticle is finer and could be a problem in prime time low light conditions. I had no need for 50,60yd pins. Sight in the cross hairs of VX-1 HPlex at 30yds then using the power ring adjust POA at 40yds to top of lower plex. The bottom of the top plex will be in the 20yd range, shooting your bow(speed) will determine just where. Closer ranges you will very slightly high( to be determined thru shooting). I just wanted a scope that I could see in all conditions at the ranges I would be shooting. This may not be for every hunters needs.

Good choice James, both the VX-1 and Crossbones will work on our Excaliburs.

The only difference is the reticles. The reticles on the crossbones are set up perfectly for crossbows. That's why they accompany my bows. The reticles are fine (thus a clear sight picture) but still have hash marks at all yardages to 60 from 10.
Very good scope. Very good. Price is the only drawback. But if your paying that much for a Good Matrix, why not top it with a really good scope! My new 380 coming will also have the crossbones on it. And will undergo the same multi testing I did on the 355. The scope suits the Matrix bows beautifully.

Crossbones Scope $340.00 plus tax in Ontario Canada. Looking at receipt now.
If you can get 2 of these for price of 1 VX1 then that's even better!

I'd like to find out where I can get a Crossbones scope for half the price of a VX1. I would gladly toss some of my other scopes considering that price!

You and me both! Crossbones is in the $300 neighborhood everywhere I've looked.
