Man, I wish the leupold crossbones had an illumination option. It's a dedicated crossbow scope that's missing an important crossbow option for those who hunt the woods. That, and I target shoot a lot in the evening.

Neil,
With my VX2 1-4 x 20 I can see the duplex crosshair easily at the end of legal shooting time in the evenings. I was a bit concerned about the 20mm objective, but the clarity of the Leupold optics make it easy to see the target and the crosshair in dim light.
Kegbelly wrote:Wabi are these regular VX rifle scopes? I've been curious how a regular scope would stand up to the different type of recoil on a crossbow. I know a springer airgun can kill the best rifle scope due to the reverse recoil, would hate to learn the hard way a crossbow might do the same thing.
Yep, a VX1 2-7 x 33 and a VX2 1-4 x 20.
Don't try it with a cheap rifle scope, though.
(stuck an Alpen 4x on it when I had to send a crossbow scope in for replacement and it lasted about 10 shots before it was trash)

I've said for years that a guy would do better to spend less on a rifle but more on the scope. I've learned very quickly how important a good scope is on a crossbow. I just put a leupold vx-r ballistic firedot 3-9×40 on my 380 and WOW! This is a big scope but weighs the same as my tact zone. I'd give it a real try before getting rid of it...besides, I think it looks pretty bad a_s .

It used to amaze me when I worked in a shop, people would spend several hundred dollars on a nice rifle then want to put a scope on it that was less than a hundred bucks!!! How are you going to get the most from the new rifle if you handicap it with glass like that. I have told this before but we carried Weaver , Redfield, and Leupold brand scopes, with Leupold being the highest priced. (slightly over Redfield) During the day you couldnt hardly get anybody to spend the extra money on a Leupold over the Weaver or Redfield.About dusk you couldnt hardly sell a Weaver. EVERYBODY wanted one of those Leupold scopes! I started telling people " Come back about quitting time and look through these before you make your mind up." Through all the years of working in the shop, being a member at the gun club, shooting in competition, etc, I have never heard one bad word about a Leupold scope, and most of the folks that had scope problems with other brands fixed them by switching to Leupold. 100% is pretty good in anybodys book!

I can't say enough good things about my Leupold.

However, the main thing is how easy it is to get the exact "zero" and then it stays there. It dials in smoothly . . .just love it.

Wabi, other than a smaller package, are you seeing any advantages to the 1 - 4 x 20 over the 2 - 7 x 33?

The 2-7x33 is a VX1, the 1-4x20 is a VX2.
The optics are a bit clearer and it seems to be better in low light conditions.

edited to add:
The 1-4 also has less parallax at 25 yards than the 2-7. The 2-7 has less than 1/2" at that close range, but the 1-4 has almost none.

Perhaps Gary will find this scope more suitable in size:

Beware when buying the VXRs. The reticle pictured and the one that comes with the scope differs. Below is the 30mm Hog scope reticle.
