Trouble getting Fletching to stick to painted shaft
I have been painting the back 5 to 7 inches of my arrow shafts for some time now and never had a problem in the past. Like to use white paint and always seemed like Rust-Oleum Appliance epoxy paint worked the best.
Lately thou seems like the fletching does not want to stick to it. If I glue straight to the carbon shaft no problem. I have tried Krylon's color Fusion and it would not stick to it. I have tried different vanes and different glues.
Anybody paint their shafts if so what kind of paint are you using ?

When I used Bohning Fletch Tite Platinum my vanes adhered to the painted shafts.

I use a Rustoleum white lacquer paint with their green florescent and Loctite superglue gel. In the past I tried Bhoning Fletchtite Platinum and it reacts with the paint and won't bond.

How old is the glue you're using?

Less than 1 year old. Both glues work great on bare shaft only have a problem when I paint the shaft.

I used a spray paint from my automotive parts supplier. It's called Plastikote with no problems.

I said something to Danny Miller once that I had trouble getting Fletchtite Platinum to stick my vanes on and the response was "Wull how old is that Fletchtite, pardner?" Havent had any trouble since.bdog wrote:How old is the glue you're using?

I don't want to sound wasteful, but, I throw out any glue that is 2 months old. If I cant use a tube in two months it goes. Then start a new one!

I've had no luck with Fletch-tite - even fresh. I'm currently using a gel super-glue.

Fletch-tite works great when used with the paint it was designed to be used with.
Not so much with bare shafts and paints it wasn't made for.

Is it enamel or lacquer base paint ?Boo wrote:I used a spray paint from my automotive parts supplier. It's called Plastikote with no problems.
Re: Trouble getting Fletching to stick to painted shaft
The glue Im using if I us it on a bare shaft the vane will rip before it pulls away from the shaft.
Re: Trouble getting Fletching to stick to painted shaft
I tape off the fletching area and crest - with spray on lacquer, white base, red or green flo overspray - ahead of that area. So the vanes are on unpainted graphite shaft. So far nothing has worked as well as Gorilla brand 'crazy glue' (blue top) and by keeping it in a refrigerator drawer it stays good for for at least a year.

Mostly enamel but I've used lacquer with good results. I believe that lacquer is traditionally used.diesel wrote:Is it enamel or lacquer base paint ?Boo wrote:I used a spray paint from my automotive parts supplier. It's called Plastikote with no problems.
You might want to call 3 Rivers Archery. They are a traditional archery supplier that sells everything to crest shafts.
