matrix 380 vs matrix 405

Post by bossman »

I am in the market for a new crossbow and have it narrowed down to the 380 or the 405. Looking for opinions from people who have either of these crossbows and what there thoughts are on them?

Unless you are planning on hunting T Rex I can not see any reason to go above 380. My 380 is capable of 1" groups out to 90 yards, nothing on earth I can't take with it.

I have the 380 and I really like the bow some guys aren't getting the advertised speed but mine consistently gets 382fps on the chrono with the stock string either my chrono is lying or I got a good one. If the 405 was out last year I probably would have bought one but I like the camo on the 380 better I don't think you can go wrong with either bow

I have the 380 and love it. I may still get the 405 just because I'm a speed freak and I love the power. It's not about NEEDING more power, I just like it. Here's the thing though, the 405 would end up being shot at home or hunting. I couldn't shoot 3D with it. If the targets are shot up or very well used you end up blowing through them and most clubs won't let you shoot anything with that kind of speed.

Paul, you may have to double up your Arrowmat Long Life Target Face from Wyverns.

They say it reduces penetration by about 5 percent. Good tip Norm.

Keeping in mind I think I am a crappy target shooter (no patience) I think they are identical in accuracy.
The 405 noticeably heavier at the front and distinctly more effort to cock.
The 405 casts an arrow a whole lot faster and flatter. Consequently, you'll have to rethink your zero.
The 405 does not seem to be hard on servings (my latches are polished).
The 405 should not be shot at foam targets at 20 yards because they bury so deep there's not much to grip.
I have all three Matrix bows and I see a division in power class. The 380 and the 405 on one and the more reasonable 355 on the other side. Cocking with a rope cocker aside you can't go wrong with any Matrix bow, let alone any Excalibur for that mater.
If you're looking at the 405 think real hard about a C2.
The more targets you shoot the lower down the power scale you should go.
The 405 is not a fun bow, it's a hard core hunting rig. It's a matter of want not need.

FWIW, I have a 380 and the only negative thing about it is pulling arrows out of my target, (18-1). I love the bow, don't get me wrong, but my favorite bow to target shoot is my wife's Vixen.

I just acquired a 330 and I'm thinking this will become my new backyard bow. Easy cocking, easy arrow removal. I agree with Boo, the more you shoot, the lower poundage you should go with.

Don...I love your honesty in light of the fact that you were provided and shot this bow for a good period before we all knew about it....I can attest to the fact that I have been a wants over needs kind of guy for too long....the economy and reality has quickly changed that.....I am 5'4" tall and feel that I am at the end of my rope so to say with the M380...I love my xbow...I just say to all....think hard and fast about why we buy these implements...to hunt...if we could throw a spear and save the grand for whatever...we would....(at least I think we would)....the only reason I would ever buy the 405 is if I won the Megamillions...other than that I am thrilled with my M380.....If it wasn't about marketing and speed we would still be killing all the game animals at 200fps and be thrilled...I have never heard anyone who came over for deer stew, cutlets, backstraps, burgers or whatever say..."before I eat can you tell me at what speed did the arrow or bullet hit the deer?....because if it wasn't at the latest and greatest I might choose to pass"...do I hear an AMEN????
