Washer weights

Post by Significent »

Has anyone ever tried adjusting/matching the weights of their arrows using thin flat washers behind their broadheads/field points?

For my BEEs, the washers would have to have an outside diameter of about 0.348" with a 0.204" in hole. I've seen some very thin washers. Thin washers would be needed for the small weight changes that would be required.

I'm in the process of trying to match my new lumenoks' weight to the weight of my regular practice nocks. After that's done, I still need to somehow adjust the overall weight of the arrows.

Use threaded stock instead. Btdt to no avail. It weighs 25 gr per inch, btw.

Saunders had lead washers if you can find then. 10 and 14 grains.

Norm, I'm hoping to find some 0.5 grain or 1 grain washers, just to tweak the weight a bit. I'd gang them together to get the right weight. They'd either have to be very thin or made from aluminum or nylon. I've requested a quote from a manufacturer for a size in stainless steel that looks like it would work, but I'm guessing they'll only laugh at me given the small number for which I'm looking.

A thin metal washer should do the trick but I don't think 1 grain either way can make a difference in POI at crossbow yardages.

Norm, true but I have some heavy shafts in the set that are 7 grains heavier than the lightest.

I believe that Three Rivers Traditional Archery have 5 grain washers. Not sure of the diameter.

I set all of my arrows to the lightest weight by filing the front end of the rear insert. Doing this I can get my arrows to +/- .5g when I make a dozen.

IMO archery is about consistency and repeat ability. Which is the backbone of accuracy.

Does a grain or two really make much of a difference? Probably not; especially when the necessary accuracy is "minute of deer" if you are a hunter. But I suffer from tinkerits and it makes me feel better.

I just ordered some 8/32 set screws that are only 1/8" long. I'm hoping they'll weigh around 3 grains each. I figure I'll screw them deep into the front insert with a little blue loctite. That should get me closer to matched weights if I file some of them down and/or use more than one for the lightest arrows.

Gold tip arrows also offer 8/32 threaded aluminum inserts (10 grains) that are easily filed down and glued in. They are 1" long and this is how they look, on right in photo, Lumenok on left.

I have a bunch of Slick Trick washers I'll send ya, for free, but yer spinning your wheels.

'Met' a fellow on another forum that had 6" variance at 30 yds and was convinced it was 125 gr mixed w/ 100 gr he normally shot.

I made up one of each, the shafts were touching at 30

That's certainly meaningful. What xbow were you shooting them from? Any idea about the speed difference between the two? What's the outside diameter of the Slick Trick washers?

Norm, do the 8x32 threaded aluminum rods have a hex pocket like regular set screws so they can be screwed in with an allen wrench?

A fine flat head screw driver slot is used on one end.
