Do I need a spare cocking rope?

Post by Significent »

I was thinking I'd be out of action for a while if my cocking rope broke, was lost, or was damaged in some way. Is it common practice to have a spare? I have a spare string if I need it. Seems like a spare cocking rope would be good insurance. Do they wear out eventually? What parts are most likely to break?

I learned the hard way during a moose/bear hunt that one can loose a cocking aid from an semi secured pocket and I normally do not loose things. After that I bought a spare.

I'd recommend it with heavy poundage bows. I always keep a spare string&cocking rope in the ute. I wouldn't want something so simple to ruin a good hunting trip.

I say better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I guess that's one of the advantages of shooting one of the "lesser" bows. I have no trouble cocking my Phoenix by hand.

I carry spare strings, batteries, etc but it never occurred to me to carry a spare rope cocker. The rope cocker I got with my old bow is 11 years old and still good. In a pinch I can cock that bow by hand (200 lb) but I don't like doing it.

The Matrix 380, I really don't know, I haven't tried hand cocking it and I don't want to. I think I would give up due to the pain, that's a heck of a lot of pressure on the fingers and the sharper string angle would make it feel even worse.
Probably not a bad idea to have a spare for the higher poundage bows.

Spare one for camp/home, or, in a tree stand?

It won't wear and suddenly fail. There will be warning signs so you can take steps ahead of time. As far as losing it is concerned, I would not consider this piece of equipment any more at risk of loss (or failure) than any other. I wouldn't be bringing it with me to a tree stand.
