Big trail cam visitor

Post by DuckHunt »

I found this guy on my trail camera today. I've seen one once before while hunting and didn't take a shot because I was not comfortable with the distance. I'm not sure I have a comfortable distance with this one.

For those of you that see more of them, what kind of weight would you guess on this one?

Nice Bear! I own some land on the Va and WV border that border the Jefferson National Forest . My guess is around 350 lbs .

Hard to tell from the picture. Rule of thumb is that if the head looks small compared to the body it's a good size bear in the 300lb+ range. If you mentally compare the body to a 100lb sack of feed you can get a better idea how much it weighs. Bears in the wild near always tend to be over estimated. Most people do not see them very often so they tend to over estimate.

I'd also call that in the 350lbs +/- range. Not spindly and long legged looking. That's a decent bear.

My closest shot to date on a bear was 8 yards. Double lung heart shot. The only reason I backed away after the shot was the wind blowing the arterial spray all over me. Oh, I guess I should mention she was 10 feet up a tree. She was dead when she hit the ground. :D Your bear is at least 350-400 lbs. Very nice bruin.
