Tree stand gear pull up rope

Post by strum »

Hunting season is almost upon us. And its time to gear up so I been trying to get some things together. One thing I always deal with is my pull up rope..
Looked at some options .one of which I realy like "Doyles Huntin Hoist"
I saw a flat nylon type rope made by Hawk in the hunting section at walmart I like but its only 25ft and call me cheap but at 10 bucks I believe I can come up with something better and longer.
For years I've used a small nylon cord with dog clips on each end.
It works well and I can pull up some heavy gear but it tangles easily.
What are you guys using?

I use a climber mostly now, and picked up a 50' length of camo string from our local archery shop. It is made by Circut. They buy it in 500' spools. I doubled over, and tied a knot in the doubled end. I have the plastic hooks on the ends, and loop them around my pack, and bow, crossbow, or gun. When I'm climbing, I can feel the weight increase when I get up to about 23' Works great, and gauges my height at the same time. For my hang on stands, same material, but I leave them short enough that my gun, or bows don't reach the ground when hooked up. There are some Primos 30' ropes with hooks on Bowhunters Superstore sight for $4.25, but shipping is a bust! If you have other stuff to order, not too bad.

Looks pretty cool brother Ive been using decoy rope for a couple years now and am pretty pleased with it I leave it on my hang on stands and it holds up good if it doesn't grow legs I hunt on public land and it runs off sometimes  My new job is opening doors to private land and I cant wait :)

I stopped using line or thin cord, found it to hard on my hands and couldn't control it very well with gloves on.
Now I use inexpensive rope at least 3/8 thick and dark in colour , not for strength but for the control in raising and lowering, especially with gloves on.
My stand is 20 ft to the shooting rail and my rope is 15 ft with a metal clip that I hook to the stirrup
I think I bought it at Home Depot or TSC

Wasn't very much for cost.

I have tried a couple of the flat retractable pull up reels. By retractable they mean you wind it back up. After a few seasons, they end up staying at home. My permanent stands have a 30' Hunters Specialties 1/8" rope with a clip on the bottom end. Its tied off just above my stand. For $5.99 it stays there and doesn't get packed in and out. I replace it every couple seasons.

I've used all manner of rope and cord for bow/gun pull ropes. I wanted something that would pack tighter, and snag less crap when hauling up bow or gun.

I'd always wanted to try the API Gear strap (http://www.bowhunterssuperstore.com/pin ... p-913.html) as it looked to fit the bill...but could never find one in stock.

I also looked at ice shanty reels like my uncle uses...but never found one set up like the one he lucked into.

He also had an Allen reel someone gave him as a gift (http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Company-Del ... B000OR9DV6) he never used it because he didn't like the thin cord, and thought it was overall cheap and not to be trusted.
On a whim, I started to use it. Well, the cord might be thin, and it feels cheap....but it works pretty well for what i want it to do. It gets snagged less on crap because the cord doesn't hang loose while you're climbing the tree. I clip the reel to my butt pack and it stays out of the way nicely.

You can give yourself a burn or cut if you try lowering stuff too fast with the slim string. While I wouldn't stake my life on it...it has worked pretty well for me for around three seasons now. I'll add a caveat though... I haven't used it for my rifle... my trust goes only so far :)

this year...I see there are more flat-strap reels out there. I've also been watching for a 30' dog walking leash.... those things are self retracting, and i would think could take the weight of a 7 lb hunting bow.

I use 1/8th dia.amsteel which has no stetch whatsoever. Used by racing crews for sailing as 1/8 has a breaking strength of 3600lbs. Its thicker than 7/64th Dia. which has a breaking strength of 1600 lbs of which I hang my hammocks with, when backbacking and laying in a hammock. All the backpackers that hang with hammocks use it. I use it for anything and everything and the larger diameter is even used on your 4 x 4 winches. You can buy this stuff at Marine dealers that carry rigging for sailing or a hammock site I am posting below. Dutch is the owner of the hammock site and will ship to Canada I think as he ships all over the world. Its so durable, that you can use it forever as there is no rot to it over time,,nor does it absorb water. Right now he has it on sale. Here is his website. Comes in a variety of colors, but for hunting I use the silver or black. 4.25 for 25 ft. on the 7/64, 2 bucks more for the 1/8th plus shipping. The stuff is also splicable. If you contact him via. email,,he will sell larger lengths of it to you also, and quote shipping.

I used quiet a few methods and for my lock on stands I just leave a cord hanging no problem. if the Doyle works as well as advertised then that's the ticket for me,,,i like to be as efficient as possible when walking in,hooking up my stand and climbing....I absolutely hate when I pull out my rope and have to stand there untangling :( and when up in the tree I have to roll it back up or leave it hanging..i know this is a lot of tado over a rope but hey the season is nearing

If your in the Toronto area and looking for Amsteel go to "The Rigging Shoppe" at 44 Midwest Road in Scarborough they carry several diameters of it, not much of a colour selection though, you can have blue or blue LOL. I get mine there for hang'n the ole' hammock.

Alot of sailing supply shops carry it.

I might be frugal or cheap but I use a 30ft dog leash. Its compact and locks as it retracts.
