Glad I had my camera.

Post by Sandman »

Hello all,

I was on my way up help another land owner when I spotted some Whitetails in a freshly baled field. I stopped and grabbed my camera and entered a small pine stand by the road where I thought the animals were headed.

Sure enough the W/Tails wandered into the pines .. Except they were not WT's.

I apologize for the quality of the pics but my camera was set for open shooting and I didn't have time to change it so it wanted to focus on all the twigs between me and the deer.

I'm guessing they are someone's domestic animals because when they alerted to me they stayed in the pines but headed in the direction of a farm and not cover. There were no fences in the immediate area.

Sure got me scratching my head~!

Cheers,

A game farm near Blenheim had 1? escape a few years back. MNR at that time said we could shoot it and we didn't have to tag it. Like was said before, mighty tasty. Now the Ministry wants them reported I think.

I have a trail cam pic of one from my backyard. Sent it to the local newspaper and they ran a story on it. Here's the link to the article:

The MNR said Fallow deer can't interbreed with native deer but that they want them dead if they're in the wild because they can outcompete whitetails for food and habitat. I have shed hunted around here for years trying to find those crazy looking antlers with no luck.

Interesting, back in 1999 the MNR gave me the same info regarding a Fallow Deer after I reported one on a farm I hunt. It jumped a Farmers fence twice daily to feed with the sheep and Mr. Farmer did not like that much at all. Farmer's brother had deer steak on his mind but only educated nice racked fallow because was a terrible shot (numerous times) with a Winchester Lever 30-30.

The Farmer asked me for help because the Fallow started running away at the first sight of humans and his not so hot shot brother gave up trying to shoot it.

So, next time deer hunting I take my tack driving .17 Ackley Hornet and after a 30-40 minute wait he shows up on time. I had to belly crawl to get into prone position under the electric fence for a good shot.

It was hard to get a clear shot because the greedy and hungry free loafer fed with his head down most of the time. I decided to get his attention by raising my leg upward and wiggle my foot only to curse myself for touching the electric fence. His head went up immediately and after gathering my composure I sent a 20 grain Burger Hollow Point traveling at 3,800 fps into the fallow's brain only to witness an instant drop and death. I told Farmer to call his brother.

A farm near Sheffield had a few get out. The MNR shut the farm down. The deer would go from the farm to a trailer park across the road.

The MNR is also concerned about CWD.

Farmed deer are more more likely to contract the disease, and if they escape, they are great carriers of the disease.
