Broadhead practice/advice for hunting

Post by colty31 »

So I have an Excal Eclipse XT set up with a red dot sight. I just purchased a Big Green Target for use with field points only. I have some 100 grain field points and Carbon Express Blue streak arrows. It's my understanding that most hunters sight in their scope for field points and then have to re-sight for broadheads, is this correct?

So I would have to constantly adjust my scope as I switch between field points for practice and broadheads? Because that seems like a pain.

So, does anyone go hunting without shooting broadheads first? (As I don't own a broadhead target)

I also need some recommendations for broadheads.

No ! I never go hunting without making sure my broad heads are sighted in. Out to 30 yards on mine there is not enough difference to matter. BUT I still check them.

I've shot my Toxic Broadheads hitting 1 1/2"spots at 65yards. That being said, I would never hunt with a broadhead I haven't tested myself. I don't think that's ethical. If you don't own a broadhead target you can pick up a bag of sand or two and shoot at a safe place using them. Well worth sacrificing a broadhead for peace of mind and confidence in your equipment. Depending on your broadheads you can either resharpen or replace the blades. :D

Sight the broadheads in, especially if your using fixed blade broadheads. They will plane and fly diff. than your field points 80% of the time. If its 3 blade fixed broadheads, I still heat and turn the broadhead to match the vane. 4 blade it don't matter but shoot them anyhow as they may fly differently a dash. If shooting mechanical, at least practice with the practice head you get with most that you buy. Better to be safe than sorry and it just gives you peace of mind to shoot one and not have second thoughts.

Maybe I'm over the top a bit, but I shoot every arrow with the broadhead on it at least once for the hunting quiver at my longest hunting range. Those I then know will hit their mark without worries. The old joke is "They fly just like field point". Yep, through the air!
Take the extra time now, not while you're looking for a wounded deer!
Good luck, and congrats on joining the best crossbow family out there.

this was my exact experience with fixed blade broad heads. and yes it is a real pain :!: so went back to mechanicals. I know there will be people disagreeing with me here but it is what works for me....I shoot during the off season and do my sighting in with field points, then I am very confident that my mech's will shoot the same. I went the other route in the first few years with shooting the mechs after sighting with field points and they always shot well(spitfires) so now I only shoot the broad heads when hunting

I tested the slick tricks out of my matrix 355 and they shot right on.I like the Rocket Hammerheads 3 blade 2" cut w 2 bands on them to keepem closed.Very accurate just like a FP.They leave massive blood trails and the wound doesn't close up.

I use a used BH into styro foam block that the blades are still good but went into the ground, but not sharp enough to use on deer....that way I can see how far I can shoot, right now I can shoot out to 50 yards with my exocet 200 with 500gr arrows....

I always save one broad head for the final sight in and shoot it often.
